Monday, November 13, 2006 - Brought to the big screen by filmmaking genius, Martin Sorsese, The Departed, brings new meaning to the genre of crime films. Scorsese has a way of taking this genre and developing it in such a way that it seems like it is so much more than just a crime story. The Departed offers the moviegoer an unbelievably well-developed story line that leaves even the most seasoned viewers guessing as to what will happen next and characters that are interesting on a variety of levels played by an award winning cast. What is most interesting is that even the smaller roles (the psychiatrist, Madolyn, played by Vera Farmiga for example) have a huge impact and added depth to the film. The cast includes Hollywood heavy hitters Leonardo DiCaprio, Jack Nicholson,Matt Damon, Martin Sheen, Mark Wahlberg, and Vera Farmiga. The film, based in Boston, is a remake of the Hong Kong film, Internal Affairs (2002), making it an unlikely, but interesting choice, for the original Scorsese. Scorsese explores a series of intricately woven relationships, particularly between DiCaprio and Damon’s roles, leaving all the other players to try and figure out who are the good cop and who are the bad cop.
Nicholson does what he does best, playing an eccentric (Read: insane) mob boss who cares not so much about money, but rather power over people. The Departed has Academy Award written all over it and the cast, crew, and moviegoers alike know it. -KW Yuddy footnote: One of the FBI’s Most Wanted, former Boston mob boss , James “Whitey” Bulger, who has been on the lam missing since 1995, was reportedly sighted leaving a California movie theater showing The Departed. Wonder how true to life Whitey found the tale that could be argued was loosely based on his own reign as mob boss king.
