Thursday, June 28, 2007—It was a night of dazzling gowns, big wins, and hot music at Tuesday’s BET (Black Entertainment Television) Network Awards, an annual ceremony and concert celebrating the best in black entertainment—singers, actors, actresses, and sports stars. This year’s event took place at Los Angeles’ Shrine Auditorium. Dreamgirls stars Beyoncé Knowles and Jennifer Hudson were the big hits of the evening. Both ladies came away with two awards: Beyoncé for best female R&B artist and best video of the year, and former American Idol contestant Hudson with the best new artist and best female actress awards. Hudson stole the show with her performance of “There’s No Way I’m Living Without You” - an incredible duet with original Broadway Dreamgirl Jennifer Holiday. Beyoncé, however, was definitely the talk of the night with her very unique and very heavy dazzling metal gown. “It’s heavy; I have to balance on you guys!” she said about the 50-pounder. With all that extra mass, Beyoncé likely weighed close to the weight of the average American woman! Sixty-three-year-old Diana Ross, who was honored with BET’s Lifetime Achievement Award, dazzled in a sizzling red-hot number. Queen Latifah, on the other hand, didn’t win anything and instead had a bit of a fashion crisis when she lost her diamond.
Other BET award-winners included Forest Whitaker (best male actor), Ne-Yo (best male R&B artist), Kirk Franklin (best gospel artist), Ludacris with Mary J Blige (best song collaboration), basketball pro LeBron James (male athlete of the year), and tennis star Serena Williams (female athlete of the year). Actor Don Cheadle was “honored for his efforts to raise awareness about the genocide in Darfur,” as reported by Reuters/Hollywood Reporter. One famous black entertainer who wasn’t recognized was Eddie Murphy. Just as well - he’s probably busy dealing with the aftermath of "discovering" he’s the father Mel B’s baby girl, Angel. —CL
