2007 MTV Movie AwardsMonday, June 4, 2007—Last night’s MTV Movie Awards featured hosting by the ever-raunchy comedienne Sarah Silverman; performances by Rihanna, Jay Z, and Amy Winehouse; a pre-recorded movie parody; big wins by wacky Borat star Sacha Baron Cohen (who won for best kiss with Will Ferrell, a kiss the pair demonstrated during the evening) and Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest; and Hollywood’s two “bad girls”—Paris Hilton, who showed up at the awards less than two days before her scheduled incarceration, and no-show Lindsay Lohan—at the expense of many of Silverman’s jokes, much to the delight of the audience. Lohan was actually scheduled to be a presenter at the awards, but didn’t show up, instead opting to stay in rehab—which is probably a good thing. Hilton, on the other hand, did show, and was all smiles despite the fact that tomorrow marks her first of 23 days in jail for violating her driving probation, and that she was the butt of healthy dose of jokes and jeers at the ceremony. Besides Hilton and Lohan, Sacha Baron Cohen was also a favorite of the night, who picked up two awards: one for comedic performance for the film Borat, and the other for best kiss with Will Ferrell in the comedy Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby. The kiss was re-enacted for the pleasure—or disgust, horror, or pure amusement—of the audience. The kissing pair was up against Cameron Diaz and Jude Law in The Holiday, Mark Wahlberg and Elizabeth Banks in Invincible; Marlon Wayans and Brittany Daniel in Little Man, and Columbus Short and Meagan Good in Stomp the Yard.
It was Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest, however, that truly came out as the winner, scoring the coveted best movie award. Johnny Depp, a.k.a. Captain Jack Sparrow in the film, also won for best performance. Pirates beat out nominees 300, Blades of Glory, Borat, and Little Miss Sunshine. Depp’s win came over co-star Keira Knightley (also nominated for Pirates), Beyonce Knowles for Dreamgirls, Jennifer Hudson for Dreamgirls, Will Smith for The Pursuit of Happyness, and Gerard Butler for 300. 300, although the leader in nominations, only won one award—for best fight between Butler and “The Uber Immortal.” Other fight contenders included Will Ferrell’s and Jon Heder’s ice-rink fight in Blades of Glory, and Uma Thurman’s and Anna Faris’ super-girl fight in My Super Ex-Girlfriend, among others. Best Villain is another heavily contested favorite category of the MTV Movie Awards. This year saw Tobin Bell (Saw III), Jack Nicholson (The Departed), Bill Nighy (Pirates 3), Rodrigo Santoro (300), and Meryl Streep (The Devil Wears Prada) competing for the prize, and Nicholson, who is often viewed as the epitome of a villain, came out the winner. Transformers, starring Shia LaBeouf, Megan Fox, Josh Duhamel, Rachael Taylor, Tyrese Gibson, Jon Voight, Anthony Anderson, and John Turturro, was pronounced the Best Summer Movie You Haven’t Seen Yet. The MTV Movie Awards, held at Gibson Amphitheatre in Universal City, California, is more about zaniness and having fun than it is about prestige or even winning—although winning is certainly a part of it. Other wins of the night: Best breakthrough performance went to Jaden Smith for The Pursuit of Happyness, mtvU best filmmaker on campus to Josh Greenbaum for Border Patrol (University of Southern California), The Orbit Dirtiest Mouth Moment to the film Clerks II, the MTV Movie Spoof Award to Andy Signore’s United 300, and, finally, Canada’s funnyman Mike Myers picked up the MTV Generation Award. This year’s awards show, directed and produced by Mark Burnett, was actually the very first one to be broadcast live to audiences in the US. The MTV Movie Awards have been around for 16 years now. —Carla Lowe
