Celebs Separated at BirthSunday, April 29, 2007 - When someone new is entering the public eye for the first time, comparisons to other celebrities are pretty much inevitable. It’s almost as if we have an innate need to categorize people and things in order for our brains to process and store information about them – kind of like the shape identification games we played in kindergarten. When Christian Slater made his big screen debut in the mid-80s; his speech, mannerisms, and overall look drew immediate comparisons to veteran Hollywood actor, Jack Nicholson. In 2004, Slater played-up the comparison further, when he took on the role of institutionalized criminal, Randle P. McMurphy, in the stage production of One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest. This was the same role first made famous by Jack Nicholson in the 1979 film version of the same name. Jack Nicholson’s co-star in the 1997 film, As Good as It Gets, Helen Hunt, has also had the experience of being told that there is a younger "version" of her out there in Tinsel Town. After first gaining fame for her roles in such films as Eyes Wide Shut with Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman, a then-teenage actress by the name of Leelee Sobieski was getting attention for her acting prowess – as well as her resemblance to Hunt.
Sometimes celebrities don’t even have to look all that much alike in order for people to confuse them with one another. On his way to a Motion Picture Association of America event in February of this year, Will Smith fell victim to a case of mistaken identity when a couple approached him on the street, offering these words of support, "We love what you're doing. You're so great for the country!" It wasn’t until they pledged their "vote" to Smith that he realized they had mistaken him for 2008 U.S. presidential candidate, Barack Obama. Another actor who has been mistaken for a celebrity in a completely different line of work is Academy award-winner, Meryl Streep. In the 80’s, Streep was approached by someone who had mistaken her for the late Princess Diana. Still, there are others who think Streep’s real look-a-like is actually closer to her line of work, such as fellow actress, Glenn Close. As humorous [or ego-crushing] as these cases of mistaken identity might be to celebrities, there are some occasions when the stars seem to practically invite the comparisons themselves. Such was the case for Nick Lachey’s main squeeze, Vanessa Minello when she first broke into show biz. Before landing a job as host on Entertainment Tonight, Minnillo auditioned for the role of Brook Burke’s (pictured) replacement to host VH1's Wild On. Despite her close resemblance to Burke, Minnillo was passed up for the part, and went on to bigger and better things. Sometimes, what begins as an innocent side-by-side comparison between stars can actually get a little sticky when the two celebs in question might actually be secretly related. Country superstar, Wynonna Judd believed for years growing up that her father was sister, Ashley Judd’s dad, Michael Ciminella. Meanwhile, beyond the great gates of Graceland in Memphis, Tennessee, Lisa Marie Presley, who is four years younger than Judd, was growing into a striking young woman with the same soulful eyes as her dad, Elvis Presley – not to mention features that also looked quite a bit like Judd’s. This sparked rumors around the country music circuit that Judd, whose mother, Naomi Judd had actually married Elvis’ backup singer, Larry Strickland, may have had a secret affair with The King. Judd eventually discovered that her biological father was actually Charles Jordan, who passed away in 2000. -Giselle Melanson
