Tuesday, June 26, 2007—Uh oh—it seems we’ve got another singer-actress wannabe on our hands. According to the Associated Press, pop princess Christina Aguilera wants to join the ranks of Lindsay Lohan, Mandy Moore, Hilary Duff, Jennifer Hudson, Jennifer Lopez, Mariah Carey, Whitney Houston, Dolly Parton, and Cher (did we forget anyone?). She’s “reading scripts in search of the right role to launch an acting career.” Yesterday, Aguilera told reporters in Shanghai, China—where she’s performing a concert at the famous Shanghai Grand Stage tonight—that she’s on the prowl for another creative outlet; and apparently, it’s acting. Why can’t singers just be happy with and focus on their singing careers? Good question. The 26-year-old songstress, who’s married to music executive Jordan Bratman, has reportedly been “reading and understanding the film industry” in preparation for her first role. Ms. Aguilera wants to do right when she makes her first acting attempt.
“Attempt” being the operative word here. We all know many female singers who weren’t so hot in their attempts to conquer the acting world (Britney Spears, Kelly Clarkson, Mariah Carey, to name a few), even though there are those who do it and do it well, including American Idol contestant Jennifer Hudson with her award-winning performance in Dreamgirls. So does Christina really need another “creative outlet?” And, more importantly, does she have what it takes to be an actress? Only time will tell. But if she really wants to make the news for something other than her music, could always just spread a pregnancy rumor... —CL
