Monday, July 2, 2007—The life of Princess Diana was celebrated yesterday—what would have been her 46th birthday—at a huge concert organized by her sons, Prince William, 25, and Prince Harry, 22. An impressive 70,000 fans paid tribute at London’s Wembley Stadium along with almost two-dozen performers, including Elton john, a close friend of the late princess. Prince William told the crowd: “This evening is about all that my mother loved in life: her music, her dance, her charities, and her family and friends.” Performances included Nelly Furtado, the newly married Rod Stewart, Duran Duran, Joss Stone, Sean “Diddy” Combs, and Tom Jones, and featured a musical mix of rock, pop, hip-hop, and even classical ballet, including a “Swan Lake” performance by the English National Ballet.
Kate Middleton, Prince William’s ex, attended as well, giving more reason for us to suspect that the couple—who split in April after almost five years together—is getting back together. Not just anyone could attend the huge concert, however. Not only did tickets cost almost 100 dollars (the proceeds going to Princess Diana-supported charities), but security was super tight with almost 500 cops patrolling the area, mostly because of the two car bombs discovered in London on Friday and the Glasgow, Scotland airport attack on Saturday. Diana died nearly 10 years ago, on August 31, 1997, when the Mercedes she was in crashed inside Paris’ Pont d’Alma, also killing her boyfriend (Dodi Fayed) and the driver. There’s going to be a mega memorial service on August 31 this year, marking exactly 10 years since her death. —CL
