The fourth of July brought with it a whole slew of couples’ news and gossip. Not only are there weddings in the works, but also two new couple alerts, and even more break-ups. First, two new couple alerts. The first pair could be cute together, but the second…well, let’s just say it involves Britney Spears. Drew Barrymore and Zach Braff: Hollywood’s latest couple? We have yet to hear confirmation from either side as to the budding romance. Music and Lyrics’ Barrymore and Scrubs’ Braff were spotted getting nice ‘n cozy (as well as hot ‘n heavy) in NYC last weekend, “most notably making out quite publicly at Beauty Bar on Saturday night,” according to gossip queen Perez Hilton. Another rumored romance involves none other than the headline-stealing Britney Spears, who regularly makes the news not only for her lack of hair, lack of clothes, lack of class, and lack of relationship with her mother, but also for her lack of a love life since her split from Kevin Federline. However, perhaps the tides are turning. Spears has been spotted traipsing about New York with a “mystery man” identified as her bodyguard. The pair has been reportedly keeping extremely close company recently, “including an intimate dinner” and taking in a production of the musical Wicked, reports DailyMail.
So how long might these new romantic developments last? We’ll give Drew and Zach maybe a month or two, and Britney and her bodyguard a few weeks, if that. Two couples who claim to be ready for the “long haul” (which in Hollywood translates to about five years): Grammy Award-winning Canadian crooner Nelly Furtado and her new fiancé, sound engineer Demacio “Demo” Castellon; and of course Eva Longoria and her leading man, basketball star Tony Parker. Timbaland, a close friend of Furtado, confirmed her engagement to PEOPLE, although there’s no word yet on the wedding date. Longoria and Parker, whose extravagant, fairytale wedding and reception at Église Saint-Germain L’Auxerrois and the Château Vaux-le-Vicomte in Paris, France takes place today, have actually already been married since yesterday! The pair was officially declared “man and wife” Friday at a private, low-key civil ceremony at Paris’ City Hall, says PEOPLE. It’s French law to have a civil ceremony before the religious ceremony. Of course, to even things out, we need a few couple splits, right? Well, don’t worry, because this week’s been a doozy for break-ups. First, Jennifer Aniston, who just can’t seem to get it together with either her film career or her love life, has, according to US Weekly, called it quits with her hunky British model boyfriend of just a few weeks, Paul Sculfor. Well, she'll always have Courtney Cox. A relationship that’s likely not going to make it is the one between T.V. personality Rachael Ray and her hubby of two years, lawyer John Cusimano. Could she be fed up with the affairs and drugs? Speaking of drugs, what’s going on with Pete Doherty and his tumultuous relationship with supermodel Kate Moss (a relationship that was ever-so-“sweetly” chronicled in Pete’s just-released “book”)? It seems things have taken a turn for the worse (could it really get any worse?). According to a number of sources, Moss not only kicked druggie Doherty out of her London home after he cheated on her and -oh yes – also for his continued “brushes with the law” (AFP), but she’s also thrown his stuff out, changed the locks, and hired security to keep him out. Our question is, what does Kate’s little girl think about all this? Pete wasn’t the only one who had an affair to kill a relationship, however. P Diddy’s (Sean Combs) longtime relationship with model Kim Porter, who gave birth to his twin girls just seven months ago, is over, possibly because of Diddy’s, a-hem, ongoing “friendship” with Sienna Miller, who split from Jude Law last year after his affair with nanny Daisy Wright. Well, as they say, what goes around, comes around. Finally (yes, there’s more), Whose Line is it Anyway? comic Wayne Brady has officially filed for divorce from his wife of eight years, Mandie Taketa, for the only reason that seems valid in Hollywood these days: “irreconcilable differences.” The couple, who actually separated last year, has one daughter, four-year-old Maile, and Taketa is requesting joint legal and physical custody. Stay tuned next weekend for more couples’ dirt! —Carla Lowe
