Dancing With the Stars Results Recap Week 8

Wednesday, May 9, 2007 - It's a tough week on Dancing With the Stars. Not only are they heading into the semi-final round of the final four couples, but the judges are getting more nasty not only with the contestants, but with each other. Bruno Tonioli definitely had his knickers in a knot when he said Billy Ray Cyrus's performance was "crap," and it's probably him going home tonight, but it would be nice if he went out on a better note than that.

And of course, when it comes to the audience in the studio last night, they were intolerant of the overall attitude. They felt the judges, and Tonioli in particular, were too harsh. They feel it would have been much better to give Cyrus some constructive criticism. Everyone felt lucky to get a glimpse of Muhammad Ali in the audience, and feel his daughter Laila did even better in the process, putting passion into her performance. Most feel Cyrus will be heading home, and one woman thinks Joey Fatone could find himself in the bottom two. Everyone agrees it was Apolo Anton Ohno and Julianne Hough that were off the hook, and as the only ones with perfect 10s last night, they’ve earned the encore dance with their paso doble.

Nelly Furtado is the musical guest tonight, and the first song she sings is “I'm Like a Bird,” with pros Elena Grinenko and Tony Dovolani dancing. It's different to watch the pros dance on results night, as we can just watch the beauty of their dance, instead of looking for mistakes, like we do with the performances of the celebrities. For Furtado's second song she sings “All Good Things” as pros Cheryl Burke and Louis Van Amstel dance. Burke has the passion here that we need to see with her and Ian Ziering.

In yet another show of the professional dancer’s expertise, we see a brother vs. brother matchup, as Maksim Chmerkovskly goes against brother Valentin in a head to head, with Karina Smirnoff and another professional, Valerina Casserinova as their partners. The brothers have different styles with Maksim being more showy and Valentin being more technical.

In a show of non-professional dancers, we have another Jimmy Kimmel spot. He and parking lot attendant Guillermo want to show us the waltz, but neither knows it. Guillermo prays to the dancing fairy for help, and up pops Master P on his shoulder. He says to just do one and to the back, then move your shoulders, as that kept him on the show for weeks. Master P then hits them a few times until they squash him, which is probably what the judges wanted to do during his season.

Laila Ali says her parents had a good time at the show last night. Her father enjoyed her performances, and her mother is already there every week. Her father really loved when Billy Ray Cyrus came over throwing punches at him, reminding him of the good ole days. Cyrus says he's not still upset about being called "crap," saying it's just a celebration, and he's happy to be there. He got to meet his hero, Mohammed Ali and conquered his fear to go out on the dance floor. He's been preparing for the appearance on Jimmy Kimmel's show which he knows has to be tonight.Apolo Anton Ohno is treating this like one of his speedskating races, as from week one he was in it 100%. Ziering isn't worried about going home, as irrespective of what the judges have said, he's had a great time and couldn't be more lucky to be there with everyone else. Joey Fatone says he's confident until the red light is waiting to shine one the unlucky bottom two.

The celebrities and professionals address what the weekly dismissals mean to them, and nearly everyone talks about bonding and becoming friends, like a real family. Cyrus says he thinks he's fallen in love about eight different times with different people. While some leave happy they won't have to do the work anymore, others leave saying they didn't get to do a dance they were looking forward to. Kim Johnson says it's getting empty backstage, and Ziering notes there's more room on the couch and less banter in the hallways. The athletes here, Ali and Ohno, recognize the competition aspect, and just want to be the last ones standing, even though they have to face saying goodbye every week.

The first couple in the bottom two is revealed to be Billy Ray Cyrus and Karina Smirnoff, as he feigns shock. The first couple declared to be safe is surprisingly Ian Ziering and Cheryl Burke. She literally screams out in joy, somewhat unprofessionally. It's hard to imagine who the other couple in the bottom two is. Laila Ali and Maksim Chmerkovskly are also declared safe, as he celebrates. Also safe are Apolo Anton Ohno and Julianne Hough, meaning Joey Fatone and Kym Johnson have surprisingly landed in the bottom two.  Burke looks surprised and confused, as perhaps she knows Ziering isn't as good as Fatone.

Between the couples of Fatone/Johnson and Cyrus/Smirnoff, as expected, it's Cyrus and Sminoff leaving. They draw standing ovations from the crowd as well as the judges in appreciation for their hard work. Cyrus wants to thank the almighty God for all his blessings, where all things that are good come from. He can't say goodbye without one more time getting everyone to give Smirnoff a hand for her patience and craft. He also thanks the fans, ABC, and Walt Disney, and mentions his album coming out August 28.

A stroll down memory lane is shown, as we see video of all Cyrus and Smirnoff's weeks on the show. He reaches out to hug her when they show her leaving him to go to the bathroom and cry during one particularly difficult week. He continues to hold her very close as they watch the end of the tape. He says that throughout his life he's tried to make up what he lacked in talent with extra effort and dedication. He's progressed more than he ever imagined he would, and he's glad he did it. He's a better person and stronger person because of it. Smirnoff says Cyrus as partner only lasts for the duration of the show, but to have him as a friend is forever.
