Since Kelly Clarkson delivered “Since U Been Gone” and “Behind These Hazel Eyes,” fans have been waiting for more anthems like these, but it seems her latest album My December hasn’t done the trick. So years after her Idol fame, does Clarkson still have to prove herself? If it’s true that “there’s no such thing as bad press,” My December should’ve been in higher demand. Kelly’s certainly been in the news lately… First there was word that Clive Davis at RCA didn't like the direction of the upcoming album - and gossip about a feud filled the internet. In a recent interview, Kelly denied that was true - she also nixed the idea that the feud (real or made-up) was just a publicity stunt for her new album. Either way, Kelly and her new album have been in the entertainment headlines lately, after she claims she just likes to write her own music. She says her album deals with "mostly the lows" of the past two years. She also co-wrote every track on "My December" - one of the sticking points in the alleged fued. The “bad press” cliché doesn’t seem to have held true in this case. "Never Again," the first single off her album, had an OK but unremarkable run on the charts. Then she canned her manager and shocked fans by canceling her tour (due to slow ticket sales?). Hello Miss Independent. No sugar-pop princess here.
The problem could be she’s trying to follow up a multi-platinum album, much-hyped due to her instant shot to stardom (thanks to American Idol). It’s not all bad news for Clarkson. On the Internet, reaction to My December so far is positive. It is still among the top 10 most popular downloaded songs on iTunes. Maybe Kelly’s die-hard fans think she’s got nothing to prove. And hopefully that’s who she’s singing for anyway. -- Alexis James
