Grey’s Anatomy Recap IVFriday, May 11, 2007—Last night’s “Testing 1-2-3” involved a smorgasbord of plots: Seattle Grace’s interns taking their first-year medical exams, the biggest test of their medical careers, Dr. Cristina Yang (Sandra Oh) struggling with writing her wedding vows, more stuff on the George-Izzie-Callie love triangle, Jane Doe revealing her identity to Alex, and the chief’s soon-to-be-ex-wife revealing an unexpected pregnancy (at 52!) to Addison, and patients, comprising four lost mountain climbers and a surrogate mother. This episode generally fared better than last week’s “special” episode filled with nonsensical, thrown-together, and incoherent tangents and plotlines (insofar as the Seattle Grace components were concerned—the Addison-in-California stuff was significantly better). Of course, there was still some unnecessary fluff and overdone stuff (can we say George and Izzie?)…but no Grey’s episode is perfect, right? The main “stuff” of the episode revolves around Test Day—the interns preparing and studying for (don’t forget stressing about) and then writing their first-year medical exams. In case you haven’t figured it out yet, or you’re relatively new to Grey’s Anatomy, the surgical interns on this show are Meredith (Ellen Pompeo), Cristina (Sandra Oh), Izzie (Katherine Heigl), Alex (Justin Chambers), and George (T R Knight).
One ironic and well-played-out scene involves the now-unsure-about-his-upcoming-wedding groom-to-be, Burke (Isaiah Washington), who—get this—seeks out relationship advice from Derek (Patrick Dempsey) of all people, who we all know as Mr. Commitment Phobic (forget McDreamy) as he seems to be weighing the benefits of the chief position against continuing his relationship with Meredith. Derek and Burke are not only acting civil to each other; it almost seems as if they’re actually drawing emotional support from one another. Burke seems to be most concerned with the fact that his fiancée, Cristina, is not only struggling with writing her own wedding vows, but that she doesn’t really seem to care much about them. In fact, she blows them (and Burke, too) off, claiming she’s too busy with test day prep. Burke seems to be having second thoughts (again—or maybe by now it’s “seventh thoughts”?). Will we see a last-minute runaway groom in next week’s finale? Speaking of the uncertainties of love, what’s going on with this George-Izzie-Callie triangle? It seems to be getting a bit ridiculous and—dare I say it—old. Izzie tried the cold-shoulder thing; George didn’t bite; Izzie is obviously in love with him; Callie (Sara Ramirez) is getting more suspicious and upset; blah, blah, blah. However, one new development did take place this week: George gets accepted into Mercy West and Izzie does not want him to go. Other little tidbits in “Testing 1-2-3”: Adele Webber (Loretta Devine), the chief’s (James Pickens Jr) almost-ex-wife, comes to see Addison with a “secret” pregnancy at the age of 52, and later the chief finds her on the floor in a pool of blood. Meredith gets yelled at by her father again for “killing” Susan and eventually the chief is able to comfort her and offer her another chance to take the exam, which she had skipped. Jane Doe remembers who she is and reveals her identity to Alex. And, of course, Addison (Kate Walsh) seems to be more than ready to leave Seattle Grace and start a new career (and life) in California. Next week is the big season finale, centered on Burke and Cristina’s wedding, the big chief resident announcement, and Jane Doe reuniting with her hubby, entitled “Didn’t We Almost Have It All?” Sounds like some disappointments and heartache are in store for some of the main characters—and possibly some Grey’s fans, too. Stay tuned for next week’s finale recap. —Carla Lowe
