Grey’s Anatomy Season Finale Recap
Friday, May 18, 2007—All in all, it was actually pretty okay—the season finale of Grey’s Anatomy, that is. And a plus: we didn’t have to say goodbye as we did just recently with Gilmore Girls, and as we shall with The Sopranos come June 10). For Grey’s, it’s just a, “see you later.” Was this season’s finale able to tie up all (or at least some) of the loose ends and endless string of tumultuous relationships: Derek and Meredith, George and Callie, George and Izzie, Cristina and Burke, Webber and Adele, Ava and Alex? For the most part, yes. It ended well, but it still left us with enough “juice” to leave us Grey’s fans looking forward to another season of ups and downs at Seattle Grace. One of the themes throughout the finale was, in a word, “baby.” One of the patients this episode—which, by the way, is aptly named “Didn’t We Almost Have it All?”—was a very distressed lady pregnant with twins, and each baby with its own father. (How does that even work?) Dr. Webber’s (James Pickens Jr.) estranged wife Adele was admitted last episode and is discovered to be pregnant with Webber’s child; however, she miscarries later on in the episode. The miscarriage, though, seems to bring the separated couple back together, and who knows what next season could hold for them. More baby themes included: Callie (Sara Ramirez) determines she’d like to try for a baby with cheating hubby George (T R Knight). The couple decides to go for it (quite literally, in fact), but then Izzie (Katherine Heigl), George’s lover of sorts, admits to him that even though she’s in love with him, she supports any decision he makes (including leaving her to make a baby with his wife, apparently).Bad news for George, though: He’s the only intern who didn’t pass his exam from last week’s episode. And it looks as though instead of taking the high road and redoing his year as an intern (after which he could retake the test), he’s going to give up the white coat and walk out on his career.
Happy news for wife Callie, however: she ended up being Webber’s pick for the chief job, and “beat out” Bailey (Chandra Wilson), perhaps somewhat undeservingly, as some fans and critics seem to think. So Derek (Patrick Dempsey) didn’t get it after all that worrying? Well, actually, he did—but he turned it down. For Meredith’s sake? No, Derek instead tells Weber if he truly wishes he could “do it all over again,” that he should. Speaking of Meredith (Ellen Pompeo), how do things look for the couple come the end of the finale? Derek actually asks her to dump him since he can’t do the deed himself—because he feels neglected by her, and if she really doesn’t want to be with him, she should just get it over with. Jane Doe/Ava/Rebecca (too many names, maybe?) meets her hubby and leaves with him, but not before asking Alex (Justin Chambers) to give her a reason to stay; he cannot, even though he’s clearly disappointed she’s about to walk out of his life. And then we have good old Cristina (Sandra Oh) and Burke (Isaiah Washington). And no, they don’t follow through with the wedding, and yes, it was sort of a “runaway groom” kind of deal, even though we the viewers could tell Cristina’s heart wasn’t in it. A little predictable, yes, but makes for good drama nonetheless. The pair end up walking away from the church, and when Cristina goes home, she finds Burke has moved out, and suddenly she has to get out of her tight, constricting wedding gown as quickly as possible. To sum up? Cristina’s single, things don’t look good for Derek and Meredith, the newly-promoted Callie might be (or at least wants to be) pregnant, Addison (Kate Walsh) is on her way out, George might be throwing in the towel, Webber and Adele might be giving it another go while Alex lets Rebecca go.Can’t wait to see what next season has in store. —Carla Lowe
