Monday, July 23, 2007—Just in case you thought perhaps the Beckhams weren’t getting enough media/public attention for their “big” move from the U.K. to L.A., last night “Posh” (Victoria Beckham) and “Becks” (David Beckham) were the guests of honor at a big fancy welcome-to-the-neighborhood party (complete with a red carpet, limousines, and tons of cameras) put on by friends Katie Holmes and Tom Cruise and hosted by Cruise and Will Smith. So who cares about the Beckhams? All of Hollywood’s A-list celebrities, that’s who. While we’re pretty sure they were there in support of Becks, who’s an official international soccer icon, and not necessarily his wife, formerly known as “Posh Spice” from the Spice Girls, the stars nonetheless showed up at the exclusive, invitation-only event held at L.A.’s Museum of Contemporary Art’s Geffen Contemporary Gallery. Besides Mr. and Mrs. Cruise and Will and his wife Jada Pinkett Smith—who all accompanied the Beckhams—the star-studded guest list, as reported by Associated Press, included Bruce Willis, Demi Moore, Ashton Kutcher, Jim Carrey and Jenny McCarthy, Brooke Shields, newly married Eva Longoria, Melanie Brown (a.k.a. “Scary Spice”), Simon Fuller (creator of American Idol), Arnold Schwarzenegger, Wesley Snipes, Quincy Jones, Ron Howard, and producer Brian Grazer.
Security wasn’t an issue: cops and looming helicopters surrounded the soirée. David Beckham played his debut game with the L.A. Galaxy the day before, but only played for about 15 minutes because of an ankle injury. That could explain why L.A. lost to Chelsea 1-0, but the Becks-obsessed crowd didn’t seem to care, cheering so loudly that Becks was reportedly “a little bit embarrassed” (AP). Okay, seriously, suck it up, David—this is what it’s like being beloved in America. Speaking of being beloved, Victoria better watch out: a whole whack of admiring female fans (including Jennifer Aniston) have purchased season tickets to watch David in action with the L.A. Galaxy. According to Daily Mail, “thousands of women are block-booking whole rows just to ogle Becks.” —CL
