How Fame Found Them Sunday, May 13, 2007 - People can earn a place in the spotlight in a variety of ways. Some people realize their ambitions to become a star early on in life, and make the pilgrimage to LA or New York where they pay their dues waiting tables and flipping burgers before getting their big break. For others such as Jennifer Aniston, Angelina Jolie or Gwyneth Paltrow, fame may come a little easier by way of a famous parent already in show business (respectively: father actor John Aniston, father actor Jon Voight and father producer Bruce Paltrow/mother actress Bylthe Danner). And then there are the lucky few who just happen to be walking along one day, minding their own business, when fame literally lands in their lap. That’s not to say that those celebs didn’t pay their dues to get to get to the top – but sometimes, it really pays to be "discovered." Reese Witherspoon’s ex, Ryan Phillippe was just a high school senior into basketball, soccer, and Tae Kwon Do when he was spotted by a casting agent in, of all places, a barbershop. It was this vote of confidence from the agent who scouted him that made the well-rounded teen decide to add acting to his extra-curricular activities, and pursue it seriously later on via a move to New York City. Speaking of the Big Apple, that’s where a young Charlize Theron set out to resume her pursuit of a career as a ballerina with the Joffrey Ballet. After a knee injury put the kibosh on her dancing aspirations, Theron decided to move to LA and try her hand at acting. It was there that Theron was discovered by an agent, while she was arguing with a bank teller who refused to cash her check.
It’s not unusual for stars to be pursuing other endeavors when fame comes calling. Model-turned-actress, Estella Warren was a teenage senior national synchronized swimming champion and Olympic competitor in her native Canada before being discovered. During a high school fashion show, a local modeling agent snapped a picture of Warren and sent it to a New York City agency, kick starting her career in modeling, which later led to acting. Another model discovered at her school fashion show is Jaime King. King set off for New York immediately after this to pursue modeling professionally, and sacrificed her schooling in the process, which she later made up for via correspondence classes to get her GED. Vivica A Fox was pursuing higher education at West College in Huntington Beach, California, when she was discovered. A Social Sciences major, Fox was eating lunch on the famed Sunset Strip when she was spotted by a producer who thought she had potential. So there you are, innocently eating, when someone approaches you mid-bite to discuss your whole future. It happens more than you might think. Brazilian bombshell, Gisele Bündchen was just a 14-year-old schoolgirl on a class trip when she was discovered by a modeling agent while eating a Big Mac at McDonald’s. Nicknamed "Olívia Palito" (Portuguese for "Olive Oyl") by her classmates, they would soon be singing a different tune when their friend took the modeling world by storm. Schoolyard antics proved to be just the thing that made actor, Jacob Vargas stand out from the crowd. At age 12, Vargas was discovered while break-dancing in the school yard. It turned out that the person who scouted him was on the lookout for a youngster with just such a talent – and Vargas was subsequently cast in a bit part as a break-dancer on hit 80’s sitcom, Diff'rent Strokes, alongside Gary Coleman, Todd Bridges, and Dana Plato. -GM
