KFC Tries to Bowl Over Sanjaya Tuesday, April 10, 2007 - What do you do when American Idol hopeful, Sanjaya Malakar won’t answer your letters? Well, if you’re KFC President, Gregg Dedrick, you don’t get your feathers ruffled right away. You up the stakes. Or, in this case, the chickens. Dedrick penned an open letter to Malakar offering him a lifetime supply of KFC’s Famous Bowls if he agreed to sport a bowl cut hairstyle on American Idol, but Malakar just didn’t bite. KFC also offered to throw in a contribution in Malakar’s name to the “Colonel Scholars” charity, which provides youth with college scholarships. Still – no peep from Malakar’s beak. Now, the chicken chain has offered to season their offer with poultry $5,000 in cash – along with a starring role in their next Famous Bowl television ad. President Gregg Dedrick writes, "The judges and critics may think you're a long shot for a recording contract, but at KFC, we think you're a real 'original.'" No word yet on whether Malakar is hungry to take part in the fried chicken franchise. Last year, Idol runner-up Katharine McPhee was offered $10,000 and a year's supply of Famous Bowls to write and star in an ad for KFC. -GM
