Tuesday, November 7, 2006 - ELECTION DAY - Politics and Hollywood have always rubbed elbows. Perhaps it is the theatrics of politics or the desire of stars to spread their limelight into the political arena. Whatever it may be, Yuddy takes an Election Day look at some of Hollywood ’s most well known connection to the world of politics.
Our best connection starts at the top. Fortieth president of the , the late Ronald Reagan, began his illustrious career as an actor in Hollywood Westerns. He went on to become president of the Screen Actor’s Guild during the drama of Communism in the film industry. Reagan then served as the Republican Governor for California from 1966-1974. In 1980, he was elected to the country’s highest post as President of the , serving two terms as President. Perhaps it is his skills with a script that led him to be known as “The Great Communicator” while serving out his presidency.
The next Hollywood hotshot that comes to mind in the political arena is none other than the Terminator himself, Arnold Schwarzenegger. Schwarzenegger was sworn in as the 38th Governor of California on November 17, 2003 and is still currently serving out his term. The Austrian-born body-building champion became known as the “I’ll Be Back” one-liner action packed actor.
But while Schwarzenegger would seem an unlikely candidate for Governor, even in the Hollywood state of California , what seems more impossible is his ability to serve as a Republican while still maintaining family ties to perhaps the country’s most well known Democratic family. Schwarzenegger’s wife, Maria Shriver, is cousin to the famed Democratic Kennedy clan that has produced the late President John F Kennedy (with his own rumored Hollywood ties to starlet Marilyn Monroe), the late Senator and Attorney General Robert Kennedy and current Massachusetts Senator Ted Kennedy.
From the Hollywood lights to the small screen sports arena we can pull former pro-wrestler Jesse Ventura, who served as the 38th governor of Minnesota from 1999 through 2002.
Also, the late Sonny Bono of Sonny and Cher TV and musical fame served as a Member of the US House of Representatives from California, serving as the 44th district as a Republican from 1194-1998.
And, to wrap up our coverage, Yuddy commends the organization Rock the Vote, which has brought out Hollywood heavy hitters since its inception in 1990. The goal of Rock the Vote is to engage ’s youth in the voting and electoral process, utilizing the faces and voices of the entertainment world to be sure their message is heard. Check out the Rock the Vote webpage (www.rockthevote.com) for videos featuring Samuel L Jackson, Ricky Martin, Leonardo DiCaprio, singer Macy Gray, P Diddy, and U2’s Bono to name a few.
Yuddy encourages you to get out and vote today. Even if you can’t stomach all of the candidates, remember that write in vote is always an option…
