Megan Mullally Talk Show Gets the Boot Tuesday, January 9, 2007—The latest TV show cancellation could be construed as further proof that we are oversaturated with television talk shows. Actress Megan Mullally, most known for her portrayal of the eccentric, pill-popping, high-pitched-voiced Karen Walker on the long-lived and popular Will & Grace, which co-starred Debra Messing, Eric McCormack, and Sean Hayes, recently got the axe for her freshman day-time talk show, The Megan Mullally Show. According to E! Online, production has been shut down, and episodes are only going to air until the end of January. The new, relatively unsuccessful, and short-lived talk show—which just debuted in 2006—was recently tied for last place in talk show ratings. It’s maybe disheartening to some to see yet another TV cancellation (after the end of the long-running King of Queens and the early death to The O.C.). Maybe Mullally fans were disappointed to see her in a straight-up, “regular” role as talk-show hostess. Or maybe we’re overrun with talk shows and there aren’t enough viewers to go around. Sure, we love talk shows. And some are massively successful. Regis Philbin and Kelly Ripa, Oprah Winfrey, Jay Leno, Tyra Banks, Conan O Brien, Ellen DeGeneres, and David Letterman come to mind.
But how many do we really need? —CL
