Nelly Dominates Juno Tuesday, April 3, 2007—While they don’t always get the media attention they deserve, the Juno Awards—which honor the best in Canadian music every year—showcases and recognizes some fine talent, and this year was no exception. Famed Canadian crooner Nelly Furtado played hostess, performer, and winner-of-the-night on Saturday, March 31, coming away with an three additional awards (best single, best album, and fan’s choice) to the two she had already picked up the night before at a gala dinner, in the coveted categories of Artist of the Year and Pop Album of the Year. Furtado, 28, recently soared to the top of the charts in the U.S. and the U.K., making her big comeback with her third album Loose, which generated such hit singles as “Promiscuous”, which features Timbaland, “Maneater”, and “Say it Right”, and has so far sold more than five million copies.
The only other multiple winner of the weekend was rocker Billy Talent, who took home the Junos for Best Group and Best Rock Album. Other 2007 Juno Award winners include The Dixie Chicks, Diana Krall, Jacksoul, and City and Colour. The Juno Awards, which are the Canadian equivalent of the Grammy Awards, was held this year in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. —CL
