Saturday, May 19, 2007—It would seem that the second time’s a charm for Jaslene Gonzalez, the uber-skinny, leggy, raven-haired Latina who was just crowned America’s Next Top Model on supermodel Tyra Bank’s CW show of the same name, for cycle 8. At just 20 years old, the model, who hails from Chicago, failed to make the cut a year ago to participate in cycle 7, and then managed to not only make it in for cycle 8, but all the way to the very top, beating out bubbly Russian immigrant Natasha Galkina and young mom Renee Always in the cycle finale. As a prize for making it to the top, Jaslene has won representation from Elite Model Management, a CoverGirl contract worth $100,000, as well as a feature in Seventeen magazine. Renee ended up losing out for what seemed like a lame, cop-out excuse: she kept looking “too old” in her photos and “too mature” to be just starting out as a model—she wasn’t the “fresh face” they were looking for, as photographer and judge Nigel Barker maintained. Natasha, who almost went home in the beginning but then started taking amazing pictures, didn’t quite make it because it seemed she had lost some of her “edge” on the runway, and Jaslene, who was often described as a younger clone of Janice Dickinson, came away as the winner for having the most “potential.” Besides Tyra Banks and Barker, judges, photographers, and other regulars on the show include Twiggy, J Alexander, and Jay Manuel. America’s Next Top Model is currently one of the CW’s most popular shows, now that the network’s favorites Gilmore Girls and Veronica Mars are goners. Last cycle’s top model was CariDee English. —CL
