O.C. is Officially Cancelled Monday, January 8, 2007—The O.C. can now stand for “Officially Cancelled.” What exactly were the writers thinking, killing off a main (and beloved) character—Marissa Cooper, played by actress Mischa Barton—on the hit, albeit slightly sappy and over-the-top teen drama, The O.C. last season? But whatever their reasons, the ratings have dramatically dropped since that unfortunate television mishap, leaving the FOX network no choice but to cancel the series, which debuted in 2003 and became an instant success. Mischa Barton’s character Marissa was written off the show via a car accident, an incident which dropped the ratings from around 10 million viewers down to four million. However, The O.C. was already suffering a mild decline in viewership, interest, popularity, and ratings. The series finale on FOX is set for February 22, 2007. The O.C. creator Josh Schwartz has said the team will bring final closure to the show and its characters by then. Before its falling out, The O.C. was a smash success, particularly among teenagers, and particularly in the first season, and starred Adam Brody, Rachel Bilson, Benjamin McKenzie, Peter Gallagher, Kelly Rowan, Melinda Clarke, and Tate Donovan, in addition to Barton.
There are some rumors that the show could yet be picked up by the new CW—a network that has a bad reputation for dragging a number of dying shows on past their peak—but this has not been confirmed. —CL
