Singer/songwriter and Babyshambles frontman Pete Doherty, who makes the news more for his unfortunate personal life (arrests, multiple rehab attempts, court appearances, tumultuous relationships) than for his music, has released a collection of his diary ramblings in hard-cover form. The Books of Albion focuses on the lurid story of his on-again, off-again relationship with supermodel / single mother Kate Moss. His collection of “writings” spans from 1999 through 2007, detailing the ups and downs of the pair’s relationship. Contents include photos and drawings, as well as his myriad arrest reports, prescription copies, prison details, brawls with the press, and all-out fights with his “true love.” Does it get any more romantic? To give you an idea of whether or not you should consider Doherty’s tome as this summer’s “must-read,” here’s a little taste. One sweet sentiment directed toward the now-33-year-old supermodel reads: “For single mothers everywhere in love with crackheads, you are a shining light of hope.” Well, at least Pete can admit he’s a crackhead—that is, after all, the first step toward recovery, isn’t it? However, he also describes his drug use as being “extremely moderate and controlled,” only to add, “What am I saying? Kate won’t tolerate this s***!”
In another “passage,” Doherty describes how he and Moss wanted to get hitched. “We have been close this time passed”—is he trying to be poetic?—“and with me smack and needle-free we shall marry in the summer and I become 10 times happier than any given smackhead. Huzzah!” Aww. We also get a taste of Kate’s side of the story. “You have touched my heart and soul, little f***er I wish you wouldn’t ring on my door now go I could kiss you again and float way." More from the smitten Moss: “You make me high, my sweet, my skin shivers and longs to be held by you.” Or maybe it was that cocaine? If you’re a die-hard fan of Pete and Kate’s bizarre romance or just really into disturbing diary entries penned by crackheads, then pick up your copy of The Books of Albion: The Collected Works of Pete Doherty today. —CL
