Someone Called The Police Sunday, February 11, 2007 - Yes, That’s right. Someone called The Police. And, they have answered the call, reuniting this evening for the opening song at the 49th Annual Grammy Awards. The missing in action for 20 years, Stewart Copeland and Andy Summers, will reunite with the still musically active Sting to make music history once again, re-vitalizing their unique reggae/rock stylings. Other performance highlights for tonight include a still-to-be-determined winner from Yahoo!’s My Grammy Moments online contest joining Justin Timberlake on stage for a duet. This may be one of those once-in-a-lifetime special Grammy moments or a train wreck of an awards show performance (think Bobby Brown over dancing and out of breath or Whitney Houston sweating up a storm in past performances)A modern day singer/songwriter trio of John Legend, John Mayer and Corinne Bailey Rae will join one another on stage for a one of a kind performance. Perhaps they could add Jessica Simpson to the mix and we could all play ‘one of these kids is not like the other’.
Another favored singer/songwriter nominee, James Blunt, is pairing up with nominee rapper TI to make for another pairing on stage you are unlikely to see elsewhere. Then again, this is the awards show that brought together Eminem, often condemned for supposedly making anti-homosexual remarks, together with the openly gay Elton John to perform a memorable version of Eminem’s hit song “Stan”. Meanwhile, Mary J Blige has become a staple to any Grammy show with her dramatic “No More Drama” of 2 years ago and her version of “One” alongside U2 last year. Plenty of speculation on what she has in store for the audience this year. Most agree, it will be heavy on the drama (despite her hit single). According to the Grammy website, Mary J Blige will perform alongside Ludacris and six-time Grammy winning band Earth, Wind and Fire. In fact, there were many last minute performers added to the roster this year, including Christina Aguilera, Beyonce, Chris Brown, the Dixie Chicks, Gnarls Barkley, Wyclef Jean, Rascal Flatts, the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Lionel Richie, Smokey Robinson, Shakira, and Carrie Underwood. Some of the last minute presenters include Joan Baez, Natasha Bedingfield, Tony Bennett, Lewis Black, the Black Eyed Peas, Nicolas Cage, Ciara, Ornette Coleman, Melissa Etheridge, Nelly Furtado, Terrence Howard, Jennifer Hudson, Samuel L Jackson, Queen Latifah, Pink, Rihanna, LeAnn Rimes, Chris Rock, Nicole Scherzinger (of the Pussycat Dolls), Seal, David Spade, and Stevie Wonder. The 49th Annual Grammy Awards air tonight live from the Staple Center in Los Angeles, California on CBS, starting at 8PM (EST).
