Studio 60 Could Be on the Way Out Friday, February 16, 2007—Maybe all our favorite Friends should just call it a night. Sure, they had a good thing going for 10 seasons with their enormously popular and beloved sitcom, but since its bittersweet end, four out of six stars have attempted to re-create their success on the small screen, each going their own direction. First was the official Friends spin-off, Joey, headlined by Matt LeBlanc reprising his role as Joey Tribbiani, which was canned after two seasons. Lisa Kudrow failed miserably with the short-lived The Comeback, and Courteney Cox’s Dirt, which hit the airwaves just this January, is receiving mixed reviews. Matthew Perry, however, held the most promise with the much-hyped Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip, which premiered on NBC in September 2006. However, it looks like the show—in which he stars alongside Amanda Peet, D L Hughley, Steven Weber and Bradley Whitford—may be on the way out. According to E!Online, Aaron Sorkin’s Studio 60 was just “yanked” from its Monday-night time slot after “scoring its lowest ratings yet” with less than seven million viewers on the February 12 episode to pave the way for the series premiere of incoming crime drama, The Black Donnellys.
Actually, the fledgling show has “struggled to find an audience all season,” and has steadily gone downhill from its season premiere, back when it enjoyed its highest ratings yet at 13.4 million viewers. So, Studio 60, a dramatic behind-the-scenes look at a fictional comedy sketch show, is benched for who knows how long. Well, at least Jennifer Aniston, who’s been busy with movie-making in her post-Friends career, and David Schwimmer, whose first love is theater, have had the seeming good sense to steer clear of the small screen lately, outside of the occasional cameo. —CL
