Adam Duritz
His soulful lyrics and signature dreadlocks have made him a recognizable talent of the music industry. In addition to being an accomplished piano player and singer, Adam Duritz, whose musical stylings are often compared to those of Van Morrison, has collaborated with big name bands and has even dabbled in film production.
Adam Duritz was born on August 1, 1964, in Baltimore, Maryland, but moved frequently to other U.S. locations during his childhood. After obtaining his grade twelve diploma from Head-Royce School in California, he studied at the University of California at Berkeley and Davis, but left before earning his degree. Before founding Counting Crows in 1991, Duritz was a member of The Himalayans, as was Counting Crows guitarist David Bryson. Counting Crows, which originally consisted only of Adam and David, performed acoustically in Berkeley and San Francisco. After adding several other members to their duo, they were signed by Geffen Records and released their 1993 August and Everything After. The single “Mr. Jones,” sung by Duritz, became a hit single.
Since Adam’s voice was first heard, Counting Crows has released the albums Recovering the Satellites, featuring “A Long December;” This Desert Life, featuring Colorblind, which can be heard on the film Cruel Intentions; Hard Candy; Films About Ghosts; as well as one featuring their live performances. They intend to release a new album as early as 2007. Duritz’s voice work can also be heard on the computer-animated hit Shrek 2. The song was nominated for an Academy Award and can be heard on the band’s greatest hits album. With their often melancholy lyrics and everyday themes, the band is much-loved and appreciated for its uniqueness and realism.
In addition to being the lead singer for Counting Crows, Duritz has also collaborated with a number of musicians. He has worked with The Wallflowers, led by the son of the legendary Bob Dylan, on their praised album Bringing Down the Horse. Duritz has also lent his assistance to Peter Stuart on Propeller, and Live, whom the band toured with extensively, among others.
Adam’s own record label, E Pluribus Unum, was founded in 1997. Although it was purchased by Interscope Records after only three years, Duritz signed Joe 90 and Gigolo Aunts before the buy-out took place. Aside from his incredible music career, Duritz was also the executive producer for the films The Locusts and Burn, released in 1997 and 1998 respectively.
Adam’s relationships, in addition to being popular tabloid material, have also been the inspiration behind many of his lyrics. He has been linked to Friends’ Jennifer Aniston as well as Courteney Cox, who allegedly inspired the single “Monkey.” His other ex-loves include actresses Monica Potter, Mary Louise Parker, and Winona Ryder. It is not clear whether Adam is currently attached, but perhaps his upcoming album will provide some insight as to Duritz’s current relationship status.
