Kate CapshawKate Capshaw was born Kathleen Sue Nail on November 3, 1953, in Fort Worth, Texas. Kate was raised in Missouri, where she harbored dreams of becoming an actress while attending high school and waiting tables at COCO's restaurant in St. Louis. After graduating high school, however, Kate decided to pursue a master's degree in special education at the University of Missouri, where she was also a sister of Alpha Delta Pi sorority. Kate taught exceptional-education classes for two years at Rock Bridge High School in Columbia, Missouri before finally deciding to follow her original dream to head to New York and pursue a career in acting.
While in New York, Kate initially worked as a Ford model before landing minor roles in commercials and soap operas, including The Edge of Night. In 1982, she made her film debut in A Little Sex and the following year, she starred in sci-fi/fantasy Dreamscape, alongside Dennis Quaid. Two years later, Kate got her big break when she beat out 120 other actresses including Sharon Stone for the role of Willie Scott in Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, alongside Harrison Ford. While auditioning for the role, Kate was not confident that she would be chosen; however director Steven Spielberg felt she was perfect to portray a fish out of water character. In one scene, Kate’s character finds herself in a claustrophobic cave blanketed with large insects, and delivers a blood-curdling shriek. Critics panned her performance as annoying and a bad start to a career in Hollywood.
In 1995, Kate’s acting had clearly improved in the critically-acclaimed film How to Make an American Quilt. In addition to theater productions, Kate has also starred in such made-for-TV movies as Missing Children: A Mother's Story in 1982, Her Secret Life in 1987, and Showtime's Duke of Groove in 1996. In 1993, Kate landed a role in the short-lived television series Black Tie Affair.
In 1991, Kate converted to Judaism to marry producer and director Steven Spielberg, whom she fell in love with on the set of the Indiana Jones films. In 1983, Kate told the LA Times, "I'd often thought how much I'd like to meet him [Steven Spielberg] because I admire him so much. But when I realized it was actually going to happen, I thought, 'What can I say to him that he hasn't heard before? Gee, I loved E.T.?' That would be ridiculous. So when we finally met I said nothing. When the meeting was over, he got up and said, 'Thanks for not saying anything about E.T.'" At Kate’s former sorority at the University of Missouri, there is a photo of Steven Spielberg, signed with "Everyone knows the Best Women come from Missouri, Steven Spielberg."
Kate and Steven have five children together – Sasha Spielberg, born in June 1990; Sawyer Spielberg, born on March 10, 1992; Destry Allyn Spielberg, born on December 1, 1996; as well as two adopted children, Theo Spielberg, born in 1988; and Mikeala George Spielberg, born on February 28, 1996.
Kate also had daughter Jessica Capshaw, born in 1976, with former husband, Robert Capshaw. Jessica is a talented actress in her own right, best-known for her role as attorney Jamie Stringer on ABC’s legal drama The Practice, which she appeared on from 1997 to 2004.
Kate is rumored to be re-visiting the films that made her famous in the long-anticipated final chapter of the Indiana Jones saga, in which she will have a cameo role. YUDDY |
