Rachel Stevens Bio

Rachel Stevens

S Club 7 singer, Rachel Stevens was born on April 9, 1978 in Southgate, London, England.

At five years old, Stevens took up acting lessons, and at fifteen, won a modeling competition with Just 17 Magazine. Stevens went on to study at the London School of Fashion, and worked in fashion PR following graduation.

At the young age of 20, Stevens had already grown restless in the fashion industry, and decided to accompany her brother to an audition for a pop group being organized by the Spice Girls’ former manager. Stevens was selected for the new band, S Club 7, along with Tina Barrett, Paul Cattermole, Jon Lee, Bradley McIntosh, Jo O'Meara, and Hannah Spearritt.

Hot on the heels of a 90s pop music revival, S Club 7 quickly became a hit; selling sixteen million records worldwide, and racking up four number one hit singles in their native United Kingdom. They also starred in their own television show, S Club 7 in Miami. However, Stevens soon stood out as the stunner of the group, and in 2000 was voted the second sexiest woman on the planet by FHM magazine.

The same year they released their own feature film, S Club Seeing Double (2003), S Club 7 disbanded. Although they did not cite a specific reason for the split, Stevens hinted that they felt constrained by the formulaic nature of the group, once commenting " "This one was the ditzy one, this one was the singer, this one was the dancer. And to come out of that and be a whole person has been a real challenge for me. I didn't have my say, really, in the group. None of us did."

Stevens wasted no time releasing her solo debut, Sweet Dreams My LA Ex, later in 2003, which reached number two on the UK singles chart. Stevens has continued to release solo efforts in recent years, and has even earned a Guinness World Record for "Most Public Appearances by a Pop Star in 24 Hours in Different Cities" on September 8-9, 2004.

Since the release of her last album in 2005, Funky Dory, Stevens has taken to playing in more intimate settings, such as university pubs and graduation balls. The album's title track, "Funky Dory" was released as the second single and featured a sample of the David Bowie song "Andy Warhol" from his album Hunky Dory.

Rumors have circulated that the pop star is maintaining a low-profile while shopping around for an American record deal.

Aside from music, Stevens has followed in the footsteps of Robbie Williams by serving as a spokesperson for the Everyman Testicular Cancer Awareness campaign. Stevens appeared in a suggestive television commercial, advising men to "put one hand down their trousers and give their testicles a good feel."

In 2005, Stevens participated in the Make Poverty History campaign, endorsing the initiative through appearing in various television and magazine advertisements, as well as donating an undisclosed sum to the organization.
