Ace Frehley Bio

Ace Frehley Biography

Paul Daniel Frehley (also known as Ace) is an American guitar player who is best known as one of the founding members of the rock group KISS. Following his departure from KISS, Frehley pursued a mildly successful solo career.

Frehley was born on April 27, 1950 in the Bronx, New York ; the third and final child in the Frehley household. His entire family was musically inclined, so naturally Frehley began playing musical instruments at a young age. He was given his first electric guitar as a Christmas present in 1964 which he claims kept him out of the streets and away from drugs as a teenager. Instead, he was locked away practicing in his room and listening to early influences like Pete Townsend and Jeff Beck

In high school, Frehley began playing with a band known as Cathedral. When they began receiving some paying gigs Frehley decided to drop out of school to pursue his career in music. Thanks to his family members and girlfriend at the time, Frehley returned to school and received his diploma. Following high school he held a string of odd jobs including furniture deliverer, liquor store delivery boy, and mail carrier.

While not working through his series of odd jobs, Frehley played in a variety of bands in the early 1970’s hoping to achieve success. In 1973, Frehley’s best friend, Bob McAdams, found an ad in the paper seeking a lead guitarist for an unnamed band. Bob and Ace went to the audition together with Ace playing for Paul Stanley, Gene Simmons, and Peter Criss.

The three members were impressed with his playing and invited him to join the band. Shortly afterward they named the band KISS. Frehley then designed the band’s lightening bolt logo. This quickly led to the band deciding to paint their faces for performances. Frehley decided his face would be painted with silver stars over his eyes, this led to him being known as ‘Space Ace.’

In February of 1974, KISS released its debut album. Although Frehley wrote one of the songs on the album, “Cold Gin,” he didn’t feel comfortable singing and had Simmons do the vocals for the song instead. This pattern continued throughout their early years until Frehley came out with the song, “Shock Me” that he sang himself and was released on their 1977 album, Love Gun.

By the early 1980’s, Frehley’s substance abuse escalated causing him to behave strangely. Frehley’s final performance with KISS was for the video, I Love it Loud, in 1982. He then decided to branch out and start his solo career.

Frehley decided on the name Frehley’s Comet for his new band and eventually was able to sign with Megaforce Records and came out with his first album in 1987. The album made it to #43 on the Billboard charts and sold nearly 500,000 copies, which turned out to be his most successful solo album. His second album only reached #84 on the charts and his subsequent tours had to be cancelled early.

Eventually Frehley and the rest of KISS reunited in the mid-1990’s for a reunion tour prompting Frehley to get plastic surgery for the event. These days, Frehley makes occassional appearances, including an uncredited role as himself in the 2001 movie Porn Star: The Legend of Ron Jeremy; a small role in 1999's Idle Hands, starring Devon Sawa, Seth Green, Elden Henson, Jessica Alba, and Vivica A Fox; and a small role in 1999's Detroit Rock City. He also appeared as himself in two episodes of the family guy, and was a guest on Howard Stern's show in 2005.
