Adriana Lima Bio

Adriana Lima Biography

Adriana Lima is a Brazilian supermodel and sometimes actress named by several major magazines as the most desirable woman in the world.

Adriana Francesca Lima was born on June 12, 1981, in Salvador da Bahia. With mixed ancestry, which is responsible for her exotic looks, she grew up fluent in Portuguese, English, and Spanish. A quiet child, she enjoyed reading and developed an interest in photography. At the age of thirteen, a talent scout spotted her shopping in a local mall and persuaded her to enter the Ford Supermodel of Brazil modelling contest, in which she shocked established stars by taking first place; two years later, she would come second in the search for the 1996 Ford Supermodel of the World. This led to a contract with the Elite Model Agency, home of original supermodels such as Cindy Crawford and Linda Evangelista. Almost overnight, Lima left behind the obscurity of her origins and became a star.

Moving to New York City, Lima began working with some of the world's top photographers, including Peter Lindbergh, Steven Meisel, Patrick Demarchelier, and Ellen von Unwerth. Initially she concentrated on magazine work, with appearances in Vogue, Harper's Bazaar and Marie Claire among others. As she gained confidence, she moved onto the international catwalks, modelling for designers such as Christian Lacroix, Ralph Lauren, Valentino, and Giorgio Armani. But it was billboard advertising which provided her big break, and her appearance on a Times Square advertisement for Vassarette is still among the things for which she is best known.

After rocketing to public attention in Times Square, Lima finally had the opportunity to access the really big modelling jobs. She became spokesmodel for Guess?, working with the acclaimed photographer Pablo Alfaro and fellow models Eva Herzigova and Claudia Schiffer; and she went on to appear in major advertising campaigns for the likes of Massimo, XOXO, Maybelline, Bebe, and Anna Sui Jeans. Subsequently she became the face of Victoria 's Secret, modelling lingerie alongside established stars Laetitia Casta and Heidi Klum. This led to her first television experience, starring in and later presenting the Victoria's Secret Fashion Show series. Adapting easily to the screen, Lima began to take an interest in acting and won a part in Kar Wai Wong's short film The Follow for BMW, with Clive Owen and Mickey Rourke. She also appeared in a famous Victoria 's Secret Angel advertisement with Bob Dylan

Lima has been romantically linked with New York Yankees baseball star Derek Jeter and with Prince Alois Philipp Maria of Liechtenstein. She was also engaged to rock star Lenny Kravitz for two years, appearing in the video for his hit song Yesterday is Gone. However, her romantic life takes second place to her strong Catholic faith, and she is famous for her commitment to avoiding sex before marriage. Her religion is also a factor in her determination to help those less fortunate than herself, and she dedicates much of her spare time to helping the children of the Carminos de Luz orphanage in her native Brazil, as well as by providing clothes for poor children in her home town. Still living in New York City, she owns a bar, which gives her somewhere to escape to, and she keeps fit by practising capoeira and mixed martial arts.

In early 2009 Lima became the latest face of Victoria Secret's underwear campaign.
