Biography of Actor Al Pacino

Al Pacino is renowned as one of the most talented film actors of his time, particularly for his unforgettable, moving, and often imitated performances in The Godfather trilogy.  Throughout his long career he’s also starred in Frankie and Johnny, Scent of a Woman (for which he won an Academy Award) Devil’s Advocate, and many more.

Raised in a Catholic family, Al Pacino was born on April 25, 1940, in New York to Italian-American couple Rose Gerard and Salvatore Pacino. He struggled financially in  the beginning of his acting career, studying under acting coach Lee Strasberg in the mid 1960s. His movie debut was in 1969, when he starred as Tony in Me, Natalie.

Two years after his first film, Pacino caught the attention of director Francis Ford Coppola
with his heroin addict role in The Panic in Needle Park . This led to his infamous and now legendary role as Michael Corleone in The Godfather mafia trilogy, all directed by Coppola. Actors such as Robert Redford, Robert De Niro ( who ended up playing a young version of Marlon Brando's Don Corleone), and Warren Beatty were reportedly all vying for the role of Michael Corleone, but Francis Ford Coppola selected Pacino, which was just what he needed to break into the industry.

After his initial success with The Godfather I and II - both of which garnered him Academy Award nominations - Al Pacino was fairly established in Hollywood as an actor, and went on to produce a plethora of films, some successful and some less popular. In 1975, the wildly successful Dog Day Afternoon was released, earning Pacino an Academy Award nomination for his role as Sonny Wortzik .Al Pacino’s career slowed down a bit in the 1980s as far as quantity.  But on the quality tip: Pacino  played a career defining role as  Cuban druglordTony Montana in Scarface (1983), co-starring Steven Bauer and Michelle Pfeiffer
. With this role, Pacino gained new popularity for his many famous lines, including, “Say hello to my little friend!” During this decade, Al Pacino also decided to dabble in stage work and theater.

Al Pacino made a film comeback with Sea of Love in 1989, and continued to be nominated for several of his roles including a Oscar nomination for best supporting actor as Big Boy Caprice in Warren Beatty’s 1990s Dick Tracy, also co-starring Madonna. But it wasn’t until the 1992 film Scent of a Woman, co-starring Chris O’Donnell, Gabrielle Anwar, and Philip Seymour Hoffman
, that Al Pacino finally won the Academy Award for Best Actor in a leading role for his performance as the blind Lieutenant Colonel Frank Slade.

Al Pacino has since won two Golden Globe Awards, the first being the Cecil B. DeMille Award for lifetime achievement in motion picture entertainment, the second for his work in the critically acclaimed HBO mini-series Angels in America.

Other films Al Pacino has starred in since the inception of his acting career include Frankie and Johnny (1991); Heat, with Robert De Niro (1995); City Hall, with John Cusack and Bridget Fonda (1996); Devil’s Advocate, with Keanu Reeves and Charlize Theron (1997); Insomnia, with Robin Williams (2002); The Recruit, with Colin Farrell (2003); and Two for the Money, with Matthew McConaughey and Rene Russo (2005).

Although he’s already in his sixties, Al Pacino has never married. However, he does have three children:  with acting coach Jan Tarrant he has Julie Marie, and with Beverly D’Angelo, he has twins Olivia and Anton. He has been connected with various famous women, most of whom he worked with during his career, including Penelope Anne Miller, Diane Keaton, Kathleen Quinlan, and Carol Kane.
