Alex Rodriguez Bio
Alex Rodriguez

Alex “A-Rod” Rodriguez was born Alexander Emmanuel Rodriguez on July 27, 1975, in New York City. At age four, Alex and his family moved to their native Caribbean country, the Dominican Republic. Three years later, the family moved to Miami, Florida, where Alex became a star baseball player at Miami's Westminster Christian High School. In 1993, at eighteen years old, Alex was drafted first overall by the Seattle Mariners.

After just one month with the Seattle Mariners, Alex’s first season was interrupted by a 1994 baseball strike. He then divided most of his time in 1995 between the Mariners and their AAA club, the Tacoma Rangers. Soon after, Rodriguez became the Mariners' regular shortstop, displaying an impressive batting average. By 1998, with forty-two homers and forty-six stolen bases, he had become the third-ever member of baseball's “40-40 club,” whose other members include Barry Bonds and Jose Canseco.

The new millennium saw Alex breaking free from the Mariners and announcing his intention to switch to a World Series-caliber team. After negotiations with the New York Mets did not materialize into a contract that both parties could agree on, Rodriguez signed on with the Texas Rangers for the most lucrative sports contract in history. He signed to the team for $252 million to stay with the team for ten years. The millions proved motivational for Alex, who went on to hit fifty-two home runs in 2001 with the Rangers, following up with fifty-seven home runs in 2002. In 2003, he was awarded the American League MVP. That same year, Rodriguez gave $3.9 million to the University of Miami for the renovation of its baseball stadium.

Despite Alex’s personal successes, the team was not excelling as a whole, which some attributed to Alex’s contract monopolizing the Rangers’ resources. Shortly after being named team captain on February 15, 2004, Rodriguez was traded to the New York Yankees for second baseman Alfonso Soriano.

After the Yankee’s regular third baseman, Aaron Boone, suffered a knee injury, Rodriguez switched from shortstop to third base. He also switched the number on his uniform, which had been three with the Rangers, to thirteen (as the Yankees had retired the number three to honor Babe Ruth).

By his 30th birthday in 2005, Alex had hit more home runs than Hank Aaron, scored more runs than Rickey Henderson, and had more base hits than Pete Rose before all three legends had turned thiry. The following year, Alex reached his way to 2,000 hits and 450 home runs. He became the youngest player in baseball history to reach 450 home runs, and the eighth player to reach 2,000 hits before turning thirty-one.

On November 2, 2002, Alex married Cynthia Scurtis. The couple welcomed the birth of their first child, Natasha Alexander, on November 18, 2004.

On January 17, 2006, Alex announced that he intended to play for the U.S. in the World Baseball Classic.
