Amber Tamblyn Biography American actress Amber Tamblyn began her career with work on the soap opera General Hospital. Since, she has made a name for herself in Joan of Arcadia, The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants, and The Grudge 2.
Amber Rose Tamblyn was born May 14, 1983 in Santa Monica, California. Her parents are Russ Tamblyn and Bonnie Murray, both of whom are artists. A multigenerational acting family, Tamblyn’s grandfather was a noted figure in vaudeville. Her godfathers are Dennis Hopper, Neil Young, and Dean Stockwell.
Tamblyn’s first foray into entertainment came when she was ten years old. At that time, she debuted on the stage as Pippi Longstocking for a Santa Monica Alternative School House play. Sharon Debord (Tamblyn’s father’s agent) was in attendance, and she pushed for the young Tamblyn to enter acting. After some cajoling and convincing, Tamblyn’s parents agreed. She began appearing at auditions, and shortly after, she made her onscreen debut in 1995 with a recurring role on General Hospital. She appeared beside Steve Burton, Maurice Benard, and many others. Although young, Tamblyn quickly impressed audiences and critics. She was with the show until 2001. Landing bit parts in film as well, 1995 also brought appearances in Rebellious and Live Nude Girls with Dana Delany, Kim Cattrall, and Cynthia Stevenson. Keeping busy, she was also seen in one-episode appearances of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Boston Public, and CSI: Miami. Others may also recognize Tamblyn for a small role in the 2002 hit horror film The Ring. Appearing in the movie’s chilling opening, the film also featured Naomi Watts, Martin Henderson, Jane Alexander, and Brian Cox. But it was 2003 that really introduced her to the viewing public. In that year, she took the starring role in the television series Joan of Arcadia. Playing Joan Girardi, Tamblyn portrayed a teenage girl attempting to deal with frequent visitations with God. Series regulars also included Joe Mantegna, Mary Steenburgen, Michael Welch, Jason Ritter, and Becky Wahlstrom.
For her two seasons with the program, Tamblyn earned an Emmy and Golden Globe nomination. Despite a strong fan base, the series was cancelled in 2005. She bounced back, however, with the popular 2005 comedy The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants. The feel-good flick also starred Alexis Bledel, America Ferrera, Blake Lively, and Jenna Boyd. She has currently completed filming on the follow up sequel. Venturing away from the commercial, Tamblyn found critical acclaim with Stephanie Daley. The unsettling indie production also starred Tilda Swinton. 2006 increased her exposure when she took over from Sarah Michelle Gellar as the lead in The Grudge 2. Arielle Kebbel, Jennifer Beals, and Edison Chen costarred. 2007 saw a return to independent productions when she appeared in Spiral. Her latest project was 2008’s The Russell Girl. Outside of acting, Tamblyn is noted for her poetry. In addition to readings, she has self-published several books containing her work. In her personal life, Tamblyn has been romantically linked to Shia LaBeouf, Jason Ritter, and most recently, comedian David Cross. |
