Anna Paquin

What would you do if you had the ability to absorb the powers of other mutants and superheroes? Such was the lot of the character that young actress Anna Paquin is most famous for—Rogue from the X-Men series. Paquin has enjoyed her fair share of time in the limelight in her twenty-four years. Although she is most known for portraying Rogue, also known as Marie D’Ancanto, on the big screen three times, Paquin managed to snag an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for her debut performance as Flora McGrath in 1993’s The Piano when she was just eleven years old.

The romantic drama co-starred Holly Hunter, Harvey Keitel, and Sam Neill. This highly praised accomplishment made her the second youngest person to ever receive an Oscar. Forty-something actress Tatum O’Neal was the youngest, having received a Best Supporting Actress Award for Paper Moon in 1973 at the age of ten.

Canadian-born Paquin, who was born on July 24, 1982, hails from the chilly city of Winnipeg, Manitoba, but moved to New Zealand when she was only four years old. There, she attended Hutt Intermediate School and began her high school education in Wellington, but ended up moving to Los Angeles with her mother after her parents’ divorce, and graduated from an L.A. high school. Paquin also attended Columbia University for one year, and currently lives in New York City, focusing on advancing her budding acting career.

Between her debut role in The Piano in 1993 and her big-screen comeback in 2000’s X-Men, Paquin appeared and starred in a number of films, most notably Jane Eyre, as the young Jane Eyre; and Fly Away Home, opposite Jeff Daniels, in 1996. In 1999 she starred in A Walk on the Moon, co-starring Diane Lane, Viggo Mortensen, and Live Schreiber; and the hit teen comedy She’s All That, starring Freddie Prinze Jr. (Paquin played his character’s sister), Rachael Leigh Cook, Matthew Lillard, and Paul Walker.

Her claim to fame came a year later when she landed the role of Rogue/Marie D’Ancanto in the blockbuster hit X-Men, alongside big-name actors Hugh Jackman, Halle Berry, Famke Janssen, James Marsden, Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, and Rebecca Romijn. She also portrayed Rogue—who had the ability to absorb other mutants’ powers—in the two follow-up sequels, X2: X-Men United in 2003, and X-Men: The Last Stand in 2006.  Paquin has also established herself as a competent stage actress, having received a Theatre World Award and being nominated for a Drama Desk Award for her 2001 performance in The Glory of Living.
