Anne Heche Bio

Anne Heche

Around the time Anne Heche was becoming well-known, she got involved in a romantic relationship with comedian Ellen DeGeneres.  This relationship resulted in Heche becoming more popular for her relationship than for any of her acting roles. Once the relationship was announced, she became more of a draw at the box office, presumably from those who were fascinated to see just what type of woman it was that had captured DeGeneres’s heart.

Heche was born on May 25, 1969, in Aurora, Ohio , to Donald, a Baptist minister and choir director, and Nancy, a psychotherapist and very strong Christian. Only much later in her life did Heche detail the misery of her childhood, saying her father sexually abused her, gave her herpes, and would often disappear for long periods of time. Around the time she was thirteen, Heche’s father came out as homosexual and shortly thereafter died of AIDS. Allegedly, not only did Anne’s mother not believe in seeking medical attention from doctors, she also did not believe that her husband had sexually abused Anne; therefore, the herpes condition went unchecked.

While still in high school, Heche was offered a contract for a part in the soap opera As the World Turns, but she turned it down, as she and her mother both felt it was better for her to finish high school. She attended Francis W. Parker School , the same school in Chicago that
Daryl Hannah
attended. When Heche completed high school, another soap opera came calling, so she accepted the dual role of Marley and Vicki on Another World, which earned her a Daytime Emmy Award.

After her run on Another World ended, Heche appeared in a few smaller parts on television, then filmed The Adventures of Huck Finn with
Elijah Wood
, Courtney B. Vance, Jason Robards, and Ron Perlman. This opened Heche up for a starring role in Kingfish: A Story of Huey P. Long, the true story of the governor of Louisiana . This film also starred John Goodman and Matt Craven. Heche next appeared with famous actresses such as Demi Moore, Cher, and Sissy Spacek in the made-for-television movie If These Walls Could Talk about the controversial abortion issue.

More exceptional roles were being offered to Heche at this point, as she starred in Donnie Brasco with
Al Pacino and Johnny Depp. Next up was the teen thriller, I Know What You Did Last Summer with Jennifer Love Hewitt, Sarah Michelle Gellar, Ryan Phillippe, and Freddie Prinze Jr. She also starred with Dustin Hoffman and Robert De Niro in Wag the Dog, a movie about a fictional president who stages a war in order to take pressure off himself, out of fear his illicit affair would be discovered. The hits kept coming for Heche as she starred as a magazine reporter in Six Days Seven Nights, along with Harrison Ford and David Schwimmer, and in a remake of Psycho also starring Vince Vaughn.

Heche returned to television doing seven episodes of Ally McBeal with
Calista Flockhart. She followed this with a role in the film John Q, starring Denzel Washington as a father distraught over his child not getting the right medical care due to lack of insurance. It was back to television yet again for Heche as she filmed ten episodes of the series Everwood starring Treat Williams, and three episodes of Nip/Tuck. After all of this, she finally earned a starring role in her own series, Men in Trees.

Her private life is, of course, what Heche is best known for. After dating comedian
Steve Martin for two years and musician Lindsey Buckingham of Fleetwood Mac for a year, she found herself in a relationship with Ellen DeGeneres. Heche has said that she isn’t as focused on the gender of the person she’s falling in love with as she is on the person. Heche and DeGeneres were so committed at one point that they discussed pursuing a civil union in Vermont . But while DeGeneres was filming a comedy special, Heche met and fell in love with one of the cameramen, Coleman “Coley” Laffoon. She left DeGeneres, married Laffoon, and the two later they had a son together. Her mother contends that her prayers broke Heche of her homosexuality.

Heche has written a book about her life titled Call Me Crazy, which details the horrors she faced while growing up with her father. Her time spent with DeGeneres is discussed as well. Heche writes of being mentally ill for the first thirty-one years of her life, and claims that her alter ego, Celestia, is the daughter of God and has contacts with the extraterrestrial world. A few years before Heche’s book was published, her sister, Susan Bergman, wrote her own book about her family’s troubled past titled Anonymity
