Bill O'Reilly
Outspoken political commentator Bill O’Reilly was born William James O'Reilly, Jr. on September 10, 1949, in New York City. In 1951, the Irish-Catholic O’Reilly family moved to Long Island. After graduating from Chaminade High School in 1967, Bill went on to attend Marist College, where he began working as a columnist and feature writer for the school newspaper, The Circle. An honors student and history major, Bill spent his junior year abroad, attending Queen Mary College at the University of London.
After graduating in 1971, Bill moved to Miami, Florida where he worked for two years as a high school teacher. He then returned to school, earning an M.A. in Broadcast Journalism from Boston University in 1976. While attending Boston University, Bill was a reporter and columnist for various local newspapers, including The Boston Phoenix. Bill also did a broadcast journalism internship in Miami, working as an entertainment writer and movie critic for The Miami Herald.
Bill’s early work in television news included reporting and anchoring for WNEP-TV in Scranton, Pennsylvania; WFAA-TV in Dallas, Texas; KMGH-TV in Denver, Colorado; KATU-TV in Portland, Oregon; WCBS-TV in New York; as well as television stations in Hartford, Connecticut; and Boston, Massachusetts.
In 1986, Bill joined ABC as a correspondent on ABC World News Tonight, for which he made several appearances and received two National Headliner Awards for excellence in reporting. In 1989, Bill joined the tabloid television program Inside Edition. By 1995, Inside Edition had replaced Bill with former NBC News and CBS News anchor Deborah Norville. Bill then enrolled at the John F Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University and earned his Master's Degree in Public Administration. After graduating from Harvard, Bill was hired to work at then new channel FOX News, anchoring The O'Reilly Report, later re-named The O'Reilly Factor. During the late 90s, The O'Reilly Factor picked up steam through its coverage of the Bill Clinton/Monica Lewinsky scandal and the President’s subsequent impeachment. Today, The O'Reilly Factor is frequently the highest-rated show of the three major American 24-hour cable news channels (CNN, FOX News, and MSNBC).
In 2001, Bill took on the public initiative of ensuring that funds raised by the Red Cross and the United Way for the victims of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks went to the victims. In 2005, he participated in an NBC fundraiser for victims of the 2004 Indian Ocean Earthquake.
Generally critical of both the far left and far right in American politics, Bill has admitted that he rarely addresses the far right, citing their weaker influence in mainstream media compared to the far left. Bill’s commentaries have prompted many disputes with public figures and sources over the years, including Al Franken, Michael Savage, George Clooney, Keith Olbermann, David Letterman, Ludacris, various Iraq War critics, and Hillary Clinton.
In 2004, Bill sued his show’s former producer, Andrea Mackris, her lawyer, and the law firm for extortion. He claimed that Andrea Mackris had demanded over $60 million to settle a sexual harassment claim. She maintained that Bill had made inappropriate and lewd sexual comments to her on numerous occasions. The case was eventually settled out of court.
In addition to The O’Reilly Factor, Bill hosts the syndicated radio show The Radio Factor. He is also a columnist for the New York Post and Newsmax. Bill has also written four bestselling non-fiction books as well as a novel, Those Who Trespass.
In 1995, Bill married public relations executive Maureen E. McPhilmy. The couple had a daughter, Madeline, in 1998; followed by a son, Spencer, in 2003. Bill and his family currently live in Manhasset, New York. |
