Bjorg Borg The man who gained rock-star status for his good looks and cool demeanor as much as his skillful moves on the tennis court, Bjorn Borg, has been described by some tennis players and observers as the greatest player in the sport's history and although his record of five Wimbledon Singles Championships has been overtaken by Pete Sampras, Bjorn Borg remains at the pinnacle of the all-time greats of The Championships. Bjorn Borg was born in Stockholm, Sweden on June 16th 1956. He was the only child of Margarethe and Rune, a clothes-shop assistant. His career was begun by his father giving him a tennis racquet after Bjorn had constantly been intrigued by a golden racquet that his father had previously won in a ping pong competition. Bjorn left school at the age of fifteen to concentrate on his chosen career of tennis. In 1972 he became one of the youngest players ever to represent his country in the Davis Cup and won his debut singles in five sets. Later that year, he won the Wimbledon junior singles title and in 1973, he reached the Wimbledon quarterfinals in his first attempt. Borg won straight-set finals in 1978 against Jimmy Connors and his doubles partner at Wimbledon. That same year in the Fall, Borg faced John McEnroe for the first time in a semifinal of the Stockholm Open, and won.Bjorn Borg is the only player to have won in three consecutive years both the Wimbledon and the French Open.
In addition, Borg's six French Open singles titles are an all-time record. Borg also reached the final of the 1976 US Open, where he lost to Jimmy Connors. During his eight year career, Borg was ranked the World No. 1 in six different stretches between 1977 and 1981, totaling 109 weeks. During his those years, he won a total of 57 top-level singles and 4 doubles titles. Borg was inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame in Newport, Rhode Island in 1987. The spark seemed to have burned out of Borg's game by the end of 1981, and he was on the brink of burn-out. But Borg's announcement in 1982 that he was retiring from the game at the age of just 26 was a shock to the tennis world. Bjorn’s modesty and good tempered attitude made him popular with the British who were drawn to his demeanor and had given him the title “Ice-Borg” and “Iceman”.In 2002 Bjorn was married for the third time to Patricia Ostfeldt and became stepfather to her two children form a previous marriage. Borg himself has one son, Robin, whose mother is the Swedish model Jannike Bjorling who was Bjorn’s first wife. Robin is following in his father’s footsteps and attends a special tennis high school and ranks in the top 25 in his age group. In May 2003, Borg and Ostfeldt had their first child together. The family now live in Stockholm. ABB |
