Bob Saget Bio

Bob Saget

Sitcom dad –turned standup bad boy, Bob Saget was born Robert Lane Saget on May 17, 1956, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. After graduating from Abington Senior High School in Pennsylvania, Bob went on to attend Temple University, where he had the opportunity to hone his acting skills. Bob’s student film, Through Adam's Eyes (1977) was recognized with an award of merit at the Student Academy Awards.

Bob’s first major role came in 1979, when he was cast as a drugged-out jukebox in the low-budget alien flick, Spaced Out (known as Outer Touch in the ). However, it wouldn’t be until eight years later, at age thirty-one, that Bob hit his career stride, landing the role of neurotic but nice dad Danny Tanner on Full House. From 1987-1995, the Full House cast would become a fixture in people’s homes on Friday nights as part of ABC’s Thank God it’s Friday (TGIF) line-up. Unlike squeaky clean Danny Tanner; however, Bob had a decidedly raunchy sense of humor – often cracking dirty jokes on-set within earshot of the young cast mates who played his daughters, Candace Cameron, Jodie Sweetin, and Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen.

In 1991, Bob was chosen to host a new show called America’s Funniest Home Videos. The concept for the show was novel and interactive for its time. Viewers were encouraged to send in their own home videos to the show, which were then narrated by Bob in front of a studio audience, and subjected to a vote by the audience to determine which was the funniest and would receive a cash prize.

After Full House came to an end in 1995, Bob concentrated on his stand-up career, appearing on Dave Chappelle
's Half Baked (1998). For those who had seen Bob previously as a consistently clean and corny television dad, his material – which included jokes about oral sex and drugs – was a big departure. In 2005, Bob furthered his now growing reputation for pushing the envelope with foul humor when he appeared in the documentary The Aristocrats. The film chronicles the different variations and delivery of the infamous show business joke of the same name.

In 1996, Bob directed the semi-autobiographical ABC television movie, For Hope, which was inspired by his sister, Gay, who died of scleroderma. Bob is close to the cause, and serves on the board of the Scleroderma Research Foundation. Another of his philanthropic endeavors includes supporting the NAACP.

In September 2005, the CBS show How I Met Your Mother debuted, which featured Bob as the narrator. On August 7, 2006, NBC announced that Bob was chosen to host the network’s new game show, 1 vs. 100.

In recent years, Bob has joined the ranks of 1980s movie stars, such as Corey Feldman, in becoming an Internet deity. The website http://www.bobsagetisgod.com features statements to support its theory that “not only is Bob Saget the world’s greatest comedian, he is indeed the holy savior himself.”

In 2006, Jamie Kennedy released the rap song Rollin' With Saget. The video, which features Bob portrayed as a cool ladies man, showcases Bob’s ability to poke fun at himself and his image.  In 1982, Bob married Sherri Kramer. The couple parted ways in 1997, and have three daughters together: Aubrey, Lara, and Jenny.
