Burgess Meredith Bio

Burgess Meredith

Though he began singing as a soprano, Burgess Meredith’s recognizable voice won him a scholarship to the St. John Choir in New York City . Yet, in roles such as the Penguin in Batman and Rocky Balboa’s trainer in the Rocky movies, it’s that gravelly voice that we love and know so well.

Born as Oliver Burgess Meredith on
November 16, 1907, in Cleveland, Ohio , Meredith grew up the son of quarreling parents. He left his family’s home for New York City to sing in the St. John Choir and never returned. He attended Amherst College in Massachusetts , but never finished, having difficulty with his studies. In 1933 he joined Eva LeGallienne’s theatre company in New York , and spent the next three years on the stage.

In 1936 he filmed his first of nearly one hundred movies, Winterset, in a role he had originally played on stage. Working steadily after this, he starred with Lon Chaney, Jr. in Of Mice and Men, and had starring roles in San Francisco Docks and Tom, Dick, and Harry, before taking a sabbatical to serve in World War II. He continued right where he left off upon his return home from the war, as he appeared in movie after movie, including On Our Merry Way with James Stewart and Henry Fonda

Meredith’s first television role was on The Ford Theatre Hour, starring with Hume Cronyn. He followed this with Your Show of Shows, Studio One, and The Philco Television Playhouse, among others. He continued with his flourishing film career as well, starring in The Man on the Eiffel Tower with Charles Laughton. Despite having reached the rank of Captain while serving in the war, Meredith was investigated by the House Committee on Un-American Activities and was blacklisted, causing a gap in his acting resume.

Returning to television and movies from his Hollywood blacklisting, Meredith starred in the film Joe Butterfly in the title role, and guest starred on television in shows such as The United States Steel Hour, Hallmark Hall of Fame, and numerous episodes of The Twilight Zone and 77 Sunset Strip. In the mid 1960s, Meredith landed the part of the Penguin in Batman. It was originally offered to Spencer Tracy, but he turned it down because the show refused to allow Penguin to kill off Batman. Meredith had quit smoking years earlier, but had to resurrect his habit for the role. The Penguin’s notable laugh was actually an attempt to cover up his coughing from the smoking, and he later recognized that it sounded more like a duck’s quack.

When not acting as the character of the Penguin, Meredith continued to film other television and movies, including Mackenna’s Gold with Gregory Peck and Omar Shariff, and The Yin and the Yang of Mr. Go, a movie he wrote and directed as well. He also enjoyed a stint hosting ABC’s Wide World of Entertainment. Meredith then received his signature role, the one that seemed to fit him most appropriately, as Sylvester Stallone’s trainer, Mickey, in Rocky. He was nominated for an Academy Award for this role.

Meredith reprised the role of Mickey on three of the Rocky sequels and also voiced the part of Puff in the cartoon of Puff, the Magic Dragon. That famous voice gave him the chance to do voiceover work for commercials too, such as for United Airlines and Skippy Peanut Butter. Although he was well into his 70s, he continued to work filming the movies Clash of the Titans with Laurence Olivier, Twilight Zone: The Movie, and Santa Claus: The Movie with Dudley Moore. His last movie role was that of the father of Jack Lemmon in Grumpy Old Men and its sequel.

Marrying a total of four times, it was Meredith’s last marriage to Kaja Sundsten that lasted for forty-seven years, until his death. They had two children together. He wrote an autobiography in his later years, So Far, So Good; in it he stated the reason he had been somewhat difficult to work with was because of his mood swings that were attributable to a form of bipolar disorder. Meredith died on
September 9, 1997, from melanoma and Alzheimer’s disease.
