When this former fashion model auditioned for and won a starring role alongside comedic genius Jim Carrey, no one was more surprised than Cameron herself. Her natural acting abilities, combined with her reputation as one of Hollywood’s sexiest actresses, have transformed her from a twenty-one year old novice, to one of Hollywood’s most sought-after and well-paid stars.
Cameron Michelle Diaz was born on August 30, 1972, in San Diego, California. At the young age of sixteen, while still attending high school, Cameron was signed by the prestigious agency, Elite Model Management. Diaz’s modeling career saw the independent, free-spirited Cameron traveling the globe, living and working in exotic locales like Japan, Morocco, and Paris.
Upon her return to California at the age of twenty-one, she won a starring role in The Mask, despite the fact that she had no formal acting training. After acting in several independent films, she appeared in the popular My Best Friend’s Wedding, which also starred Julia Roberts. Her title role in 1998 hit comedy There’s Something About Mary made her one of Hollywood’s most famous faces. Since this film, Diaz was the voice of Princess Fiona in the loveable Shrek movies, and starred in the Charlie’s Angels films. Both of these projects were extremely lucrative for Diaz, earning her ten and twenty million dollars respectively.
Nominated for two Golden Globe awards for her appearances in Being John Malcovich and Vanilla Sky, Cameron’s acting ability is evident to movie-goers and critics alike. Recent films include The Holiday, which was released for the 2006 holiday season. She will also have another stint as the voice of Princess Fiona in Shrek the Third. In her personal life, Cameron is a vocal George Bush opponent and is notorious for refusing to sign autographs.
Cameron has been romantically linked to some of music and film’s most beautiful faces. She was romantically involved with There’s Something About Mary co-star Matt Dillon and lived with him for some time during the 1990s. In 2000, Diaz became engaged to Jared Leto, star of the short-lived drama My So Called Life, which also starred Claire Danes. The Leto-Diaz engagement would ultimately not last, and in 2002 the couple separated.
Diaz is currently involved with Grammy Award winning singer Justin Timberlake, the former ‘N Sync member who was also in a long-term relationship with pop singer Britney Spears. The Timberlake-Diaz relationship has been covered extensively by the tabloids. Stories of fights, Cameron’s jealous behavior, the couple’s engagement and wedding plans, and even speculations that Cameron may be pregnant have been frequently reported. The couple has dismissed these stories, including those insisting that the couple is engaged.
In June of 2006, it was reported that the younger Justin ended the relationship just as Cameron was set to leave for Los Angeles to finish filming for an upcoming movie. But it appears this was just another fabrication of the entertainment media.
However, in January of 2007, more substantial claims were made that the couple had actually broken up. It was reported that the two did not celebrate the Christmas holidays together.
In 2008 Cameron Diaz topped the annual list for the best paid actress in Hollywood having grossed in excess of $52 million in the previous 12 months. She put Leonardo DiCaprio into second place.
