Carey Lowell Biography American actress Carey Lowell is most known for her time as a 1989 “Bond Girl,” but she is also noted for her longtime turn as Jamie Ross on the popular legal series Law & Order.
Carey Lowell was born February 11, 1961 in Huntington, New York. Her father was James Lowell, a geologist, and as such, she would often accompany him on his various business trips. Lowell had a relatively normal childhood, graduating high school on time and without incident. However, once she obtained her initial education, her career immediately took off to great success. She came under contract with Ford Modeling Agency, and with her fresh young face, began working for the likes of Calvin Klein and Ralph Lauren. Not long after, she set her sights to acting. She made her onscreen debut in 1986 with the action thriller Dangerously Close. She then switched gears in late 1986 to appear in the Robin Williams and Peter OToole comedy Club Paradise. Lowell’s first lead came just one year later with Down Twisted. Both audiences and critics found it mediocre at best. But film buffs may find the film interesting for the bit part of Tarah, portrayed by an up and coming Courteney Cox.
In 1989, Lowell won the coveted role of Pam Bouvier in the newest James Bond film License to Kill opposite Timothy Dalton. Wayne Newton and Benicio Del Toro also appeared in smaller roles. Winning a slot as a “Bond Girl” meant her status as a cult icon was solidified, and she joined the ranks of fellow Bond babes Ursula Andress, Jill St John, Jane Seymour, Famke Janssen, and Halle Berry. Post-Bond, Lowell continued to have a successful and fruitful career. After several little seen film roles, she once again gained large exposure with a turn in 1993’s romantic comedy Sleepless in Seattle. One of a large and talented cast, Lowell shared the screen with Tom Hanks, Meg Ryan, Bill Pullman, Rosie ODonnell, Rita Wilson, and David Hyde Pierce. Although she continued to dabble in film, it would be television that ultimately put Lowell back in the limelight. In 1996, she took the role of Jamie Ross on Law & Order, a role she would hold until 2001. A regular cast member, she shared scenes with Jerry Orbach, Jesse L Martin, Sam Waterston, and Dianne Wiest.
She reprised the role for a 2005 series spin off called Law & Order: Trial by Jury. The cast was led by Bebe Neuwirth, Amy Carlson, and Kirk Acevedo, but the series only managed to stay on air for one season. Others may know Lowell for her role as the title character in 2003’s More than Meets the Eye: The Joan Brock Story. She also rounded out the all-star cast of 2005’s critically acclaimed Empire Falls with Ed Harris, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Helen Hunt, Paul Newman, Robin Wright Penn, Aidan Quinn, and Joanne Woodward. Most recently, she has appeared on several episodes of the new series Six Degrees. In her personal life, Lowell has been married three times. Her first husband was John Stember, and their marriage ended in 1988 after four years together. Her second marriage was to Griffin Dunne. They had one child before divorcing in 1995. Her current marriage is to Richard Gere. They wed in 2002, and they are still together. They have one child, Homer James Jigme Gere. Both she and Gere are dedicated practitioners of Tibetan Buddhism. |
