American actor Carlos Bernard established himself onstage before transitioning into film and television. After several years of bit parts, Bernard got his foot in the acting door with a role on The Young and the Restless. Shortly after, he landed his best known role as Tony Almeida on 24.
Carlos Bernard Papierski was born October 12, 1962 in Evanston, Illinois. His mother hails from Madrid, while his father is of Polish heritage. Growing up connected to his Spanish roots, Bernard is fluent in Spanish.
On the education front, Bernard first attended Illinois State University. Deciding to focus his energies on the study of acting, Bernard went on to secure his masters at the American Conservatory Theater.
Before he ever stepped in front of the camera, Bernard was a dedicated and diverse stage actor. To that end, he had a particularly notable turn in Good opposite Hollywood actor William Hurt. Taking part in more traditional productions as well, Bernard tackled William Shakespeare’s work in both Hamlet and As You Like It.
Increasing his exposure in 1996, Bernard expanded his career with the addition of television and film roles to his résumé. His onscreen debut came with the horror film The Killing Jar. The tepidly received film costarred Brett Cullen, Tamlyn Tomita, and Wes Studi.
Bernard also had a one-episode appearance in F/X: The Series in the same year. The series featured leads Christina Cox and Cameron Daddo.
Others may recognize Bernard for his one-episode stint in Silk Stalkings and Night Man.
His first recurring role came not long after in 1997 on Sunset Beach. His small role was featured opposite Susan Ward, Clive Robertson, Sarah Buxton, and others.
Bernard’s big break, however, came in 1999. In this year, he earned the role of Rafael Delgado in the popular soap opera The Young and the Restless. He was with the program throughout 1999.
Completing film work as well, Bernard also landed roles in 2000’s The Colonel’s Last Flight and Mars and Beyond with Edward Asner, Robert Abrams, and Majel Barrett.
But it was 2001 that offered Bernard the role that would make him a household name. Auditioning for and landing the role of Tony Almeida on 24, Bernard was a series regular on the new action thriller series.
Soaring to acclaim and success, the show became one of the most popular programs on television. Fellow regulars to enjoy the success included Kiefer Sutherland, Mary Lynn Rajskub, Dennis Haysbert, Elisha Cuthbert, and others.
Bernard was with the series for three seasons before being written out of the script. The writers, however, quickly added him back to the rotation in the show’s fourth season. He remained with the show for several more seasons before definitive word came that he would remain a series regular.
In his personal life, Bernard married Sharisse Baker Bernard in 1999. They have one child (born mid-2003), and they are currently still together.
