Carrie-Anne Moss is a Canadian actress who shot to fame as Keanu Reeves' co-star in The Matrix. She has enjoyed a wide-ranging acting career and has also been successful as a model and singer.
Carrie-Anne Moss was born on August 21, 1967, in the small town of Burnaby near Vancouver, British Columbia. She was named after the song by The Hollies, which was in the charts at the time. Growing up with her single mother, she took an early interest in acting and joined the Vancouver Children's Musical Theater at the age of eleven. A pupil at Magee Secondary School, along with Ally McBeal star Gil Bellows, she got her first touring experience traveling to Europe with the school choir. On returning, she enrolled at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in Pasadena, California, where she majored in acting, but by then she was also developing an interest in modeling as a career. When she was twenty she moved to Europe where she traveled extensively doing modeling work. It was in Spain that she got her first acting role, in the series Dark Justice, with Ramy Zada and Dick O'Neill, and this led to her return to California when the show relocated.
Over the next eight years, Moss appeared in a series of television shows including Forever Knight, with Catherine Disher and Geraint Wyn Davies; Matrix, with Nick Mancuso and Phillip Jarret; Baywatch, with David Hasselhoff and Pamela Anderson; and Models Inc., with Linda Gray and Emma Samms. She got her first film role in 1993 independent Flashfire, alongside Billy Zane, and went on to appear opposite Mark Dacascos in Sabotage. It was this that led to her discovery by the Wachowski brothers, who provided her with her breakthrough role opposite Keanu Reeves in The Matrix. The part demanded rigorous physical work and Moss had to prove that she could fight convincingly as well as act. As latex-clad computer hacker Trinity, she became an iconic figure, and to this day she complains that she can't put on a pair of sunglasses without being recognized.
Starring in The Matrix was a turning point in Moss's career. She went on to appear in its two sequels and also won parts in highly acclaimed films like Memento, with Guy Pearce and her old friend Joe Pantoliano, and Chocolat, with Juliette Binoche, Alfred Molina, Johnny Depp and Dame Judi Dench. More recently she has won a Genie award for her work with Alan Rickman and Sigourney Weaver in Snow Cake. She has also done voice work for several animated Matrix projects, capitalizing on the skills she developed when contributing to episodes of Spider-Man.
Moss has always been careful to keep her private and public lives separate, but it is nevertheless public knowledge that at one point she dated Keanu Reeves, adding to the chemistry between them in The Matrix. In 1999 she married fellow actor Steven Roy, with whom she now has two sons.
