With so much royal blood flowing through her veins it makes one wonder that if model and actress Catherine Oxenberg were to cut herself, would the blood run blue?
Born in New York City on September 22, 1961, to Her Royal Heiness Princess Jelisaveta of Yugoslavia and Serbia and as the second cousin of Prince Charles, The Prince of Wales, and Queen Sophie of Spain, she also heralds from Greek, Danish, English, Scandinavian, and Russian royalty through her grandparents. As if those weren’t enough royal connections Catherine also turned down a proposal of marriage from her cousin Prince Andrew, the second son of Queen Elizabeth II.
Catherine was named after her five-times-great-grandmother Catherine the Great, Empress of all the Russias (1729-1796).
Her father, Howard Oxenberg, a New York dress manufacturer, married Princess Elizabeth of Yugoslavia and together they had Catherine and her younger sister Christina Oxenbrg, who is a writer. In 1969, her parents divorced and her mother married English banker Neil Balfour giving Catherine a younger half brother Nicholas Balfour.
Before Catherine’s mother divorced for the second time Catherine had already moved back to the USA to go to a smart prep school, St Paul’s, in Concord, New Hampshire. When she graduated, she went on to Harvard University and then transferred to Columbia University where she read psychology, philosophy, and mythology. It was during her time at Columbia that she became a successful fashion model and tried out her skills in acting.
Catherine was very fortunate in finding her first acting coach, the already famous Richard Burton, who at the time was engaged to her mother Princess Elizabeth. By then Burton had divorced Elizabeth Taylor.
From 1989 to 1990 Catherine dated the now U.S. Senator John Kerry after his first marriage ended and before he went on to marry Teresa Heinz Kerry.
In July 1988, Catherine married film producer Robert Evans (the marriage was annulled within ten days) and then she went on to marry Casper van Dien on May 8, 1999. Dien had divorced the granddaughter of Robert Mitchum before marrying Catherine.
Catherine has three daughters, India Riven Oxenberg, (the father of this daughter has never been publicly identified) Maya van Dien, and Celeste Alma van Dien.
In 1982, Catherine made her debut as an actress in the made for television film The Royal Romance of Charles and Diana. Strangely enough, she played her real life distant relative, Princess Diana, after which she was personally signed by Aaron Spelling to his hit TV series Dynasty.
From 1984 to 1986, Catherine joined the cast of Dynasty as Amanda, the daughter of Alexis and Blake Carrington, played by Joan Collins and John Forsythe. The cast of Dynasty saw many famous stars such as, Heather Locklear, Kate O’Mara, John James, Emma Sams, and Linda Evans, the ex-wife of John Derek who went on to marry model, Bo Derek.
Among her varying acting roles Oxenberg has starred with Jon Voight, father of Angelina Jolie, in Dom DeLuise's Boys Will Be Boys, and hosted Saturday Night Live with Paul Simon.
Nowadays Catherine makes appearances on television shows in the United States and the United Kingdom.
