Born in small-town French Canada, this singer’s voice has captivated millions. She has achieved international super-stardom, found life-long love with a much-older man, and recently gave birth to her own beautiful boy.
Celine Dion was born on March 30, 1968, in Charlemagne, Quebec. A love for music seems to run in the family and at a young age she could be seen singing in her parents’ piano bar alongside her thirteen brothers and sisters. At the young age of twelve, she worked with her mother and brother to record her first song. When the demo tape reached music manager Rene Angelil, he knew instantly he was listening to a future star. In an incredible leap of faith, he mortgaged his house to produce Celine’s first album, which made her a star in Quebec.
Although she continued to make music and receive recognition throughout her teens, worldwide fame remained elusive. That would all change when she learned English, underwent a dramatic physical transformation, including extensive dental work, and released her 1990 album Unison. The album was well received by critics as well as English-speaking audiences in the United States, Europe, and Asia. Just a year after the release of her first English album, Celine would win an Academy Award for best song, as well as a Grammy Award for her title song featured on Disney’s Beauty and the Beast.
After receiving these prestigious awards, Celine’s popularity only continued to grow throughout the 1990s with the release of thirteen albums, including several recorded in French. By the end of the early 90s, with chart-topping albums in many countries; a hit song from the film Titanic, the movie starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Kate Winslet, Billy Zane, and Kathy Bates; total album sales reaching nearly one hundred million; and an impressive collection of awards, there was no denying that Celine had achieved the super-stardom she had always dreamed of. After a two year hiatus, Celine returned to the music industry in 2002 with the release of A New Day Has Come and her 2003 release One Heart.
Although these albums received lukewarm reception by critics, and sales were not as impressive those of the 1990s, Celine’s true fans were grateful for her comeback.
In 2005, she received the diamond award for her amazing record sales. These days, Celine can be found performing and singing in Las Vegas at Caesar’s Palace. Her contract will last for the next three years and see Celine performing five nights a week at the popular casino.
Celine’s life-long love is her manager, Rene Angelil, whom she met when she was barely in her teens.
They kept their relationship secret for years both because of the 26 year age difference and the young age at which Celine met Rene. Their fears about the reaction of the public, however, appeared to be largely unfounded. When their love was revealed, Celine’s fans and the general public reacted well and most expressed their happiness for Celine and Rene. They were married in December of 1994. During her career break, Celine gave birth to the couple’s son: Rene Charles Angelil on January 25, 2001.
He was the inspiration behind her moving ballad "Beautiful Boy."
