Chad Johnson
Chad Johnson is the popular and entertaining, gold tooth wearing wide receiver for the Cincinnati Bengals of the National Football League (NFL). He was drafted from Oregon State University in 2001.
Chad was born January 9, 1978, in Miami, Florida. He graduated from Miami Beach Senior High School and then studied at Santa Monica Junior College. While in college he played on the professional football team, the Carolina Panthers.
In 2000 the head coach of Oregon State University, Dennis Erickson, recruited Chad. Chad soon transferred to the university where he was later drafted into the NFL a year later. Chad studied physical education at the university.
While at the university, Chad played amazing football. He led his team to an 11-1 season and a victory in the United States College Football game, the Fiesta Bowl. He also broke the school’s record for the longest touchdown reception by a player.
When he was drafted into the NFL, Chad said that his goal was to be in the Pro Bowl four of his first five years. As a new NFL player, Chad saw quite a bit of playing time, catching 28 passes for 329 yards and 1 touchdown. In 2003 he was named to the Pro Bowl and has been in the Pro Bowl ever since. When he was selected for his fourth Pro Bowl in 2006, Chad accomplished his goal.
Fan voting for the 2006 Pro Bowl selected Chad as the most popular wide receiver with 987,650 total votes.
Chad has earned nationwide attention for his flamboyant attitude, which is often seen during end zone celebrations after catching touchdown passes. He’s known for using props like his pylon putt (for which he was fined $5,000) or antics like pretend marriage proposals.
In August 2006 he was the top of a list of 10 showboats in professional sports compiled by Fox Sports. In 2006 Chad also cut his hair into a mohawk and bleached it blond, but recently got rid of it due to a friendly bet he had made with Atlanta cornerback DeAngelo Hal. If the Bengals lost to the Atlanta Falcons, Chad promised to cut off his mohawk. But if the Bengals won, then DeAngelo would have to work in Willie Anderson's (Chad’s teammate) Atlanta restaurant, Big Willy's Fatburger. The Bengals lost and Chad honored his side of the bet.
On October 24, 2006, Chad appeared on the cover of Sports Illustrated. A day later he announced that in honor of Spanish Heritage Month, he would prefer to be called Ocho-Cinco, which loosely stands for his jersey number eighty-five in Spanish. During the October 29 pre-game warm-ups he wore an Ocho-Cinco nameplate on his jersey that covered his real surname. Quarterback Carson Palmer ripped the label from his jersey and the NFL fined Chad $5,000 for the stunt, an action Chad is expected to appeal. During Superbowl XLI, Chad appeared in a commercial, in which he threw a party with guests that also included Martha Stewart, Janet Reno, Jimmy Fallon, David Beckham, LL Cool J, Reggie Bush, and Rascal Flatts.
Chad currently has an extended contract with the NFL that will last until 2011 and pay him an additional $35.5 million. YUDDY |
