Cheech Marin Bio

Cheech Marin

Cheech Marin, real name Richard Anthony Marin, is a Mexican-American actor and director. He earned his nickname Cheech through his fondness of Chicano food, especially chicharron, a spicy fried pork skin snack.

He was born on July 13, 1946, to father Oscar Marin, a Los Angeles Police Department officer, and mother Elsa Melsa. He is one of eight children. Cheech went to California State University where he belonged to the Phi Sigma Kappa fraternity. In an attempt to avoid the draft during the height of the Vietnam War in 1968, Marin dropped out of university and moved to Vancouver, British Columbia, .

In Vancouver Marin met his future comedic partner Tommy Chong. They created the duo Cheech and Chong and played the
roles of a pair of zoned-out dopers who are always searching for the perfect joint. The Cheech and Chong duo participated in a number of comedy films and feature film comedies such as Up in Smoke in 1978, which ended up being one of Warner Brothers’ highest grossing films.

Their second move, Cheech and Chong’s Next Movie, also did exceptionally well and grossed more than $160 million.

As the drug culture lost its popularity, so did Cheech and Chong’s performances. The two split up after their final performance in the 1984 movie, The Corsican Brothers.

Marin went on to star in several films as a solo actor, his most notable role being that of Rudy in 1987’s Born in East LA, a movie that he also wrote and directed.

In 1993 Marin recorded a children’s album called My Name is Cheech, the School Bus Driver. In 1995 he played a bartender in Robert Rodriguez’s film Desperado. The following year he landed three roles in another Robert Rodriguez film, From Dusk Till Dawn. He followed this with a prominent role in 1996’s Tin Cup starring Kevin Costner. Marin’s role as Romeo Posar in Tin Cup landed him a co-starring role opposite Don Johnson in the CBS detective series, Nash Bridges.

He also provided the voice for several Disney animated films including Oliver and Company (1988), The Lion King (1994), and Cars (2006), where he voiced the low rider Ramone. He also made a small appearance as a dockworker in the 1989 movie Ghostbusters II. In the fall of 2006 Marin participated in Simon Cowell’s Celebrity Duets.

Marin is twice divorced, has three children, and currently lives in San Francisco’s Seacliff neighborhood.
