ChingyTrue-to-his-roots hip-hop artist Chingy, was born Howard Bailey Jr. on March 9, 1980, in St. Louis, Missouri. Growing up in the Walnut Park section of St. Louis, Chingy was heavily-influenced by the Motown melodies of Michael Jackson, Marvin Gaye, and the Temptations. At eight years old, Chingy wrote his first rhyme. Four years later, he had become a regular fixture at local talent shows. Chingy began rapping his late teens, and chose his stage name (which is slang for "money") over such potential names as "Thugsy" and "H Thugs." Chingy first gained exposure on the hip hop scene during the summer of 2002, when he toured as an opening act for Nelly. Chingy was then taken under the wing of Ludacris, who signed him under his new record label, Disturbing Tha Peace.
In 2003 Chingy released his debut album, Jackpot. The album sold a respectable two million copies, and featured the singles "Holidae In," with Snoop Dogg and Ludacris; "One Call Away," featuring J-Weav; and the rhythmic club dance hit "Right Thurr," which was included on the soundtrack to the video game NBA Live 2004 and on Pixar’s CGI-animated movie Robots in 2005. "Right Thurr" peaked at #4 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and received the 2004 Source Awards for Remix of the Year and Solo Artist Single of the Year.
In 2004, Chingy released his next album, Powerballin'. It featured the single "Balla Baby," as well as the hit song "I Like That." In 2006, Chingy showed his listeners that he was still very much connected to who he is and where he comes from in the two-part, semi-autobiographical album Hoodstar. He enlisted an ensemble of the best in the business to produce the album, including Jermaine Dupri, Poli Paul, Timbaland, The Trak Starz, Mannie Fresh, Mr. Collipark, and Kwame. The album also includes appearances by Three 6 Mafia, Tyrese, Young Spiffy (Chingy’s cousin), and Fatman Scoop. The album showcases the singles "Pullin’ Me Back," "U A Freak," and dance anthem "Ass N Da Aurr."
Eventually, Chingy decided to make a break from Disturbing Tha Peace Records in order to found his own label, Slot-O-Lot Records for himself and his group GIB (Git It Boyz). A feud ensued with Disturbing Tha Peace label founder, Ludacris and fellow St. Louis rapper, Nelly. The feud has since been reconciled.
Chingy claims to own over 4,000 pairs of sneakers, including Nike’s Air Force One’s, Adidas, and Louis Vuittons. This love of footwear is also reflected in the lyrics to his song "Nike Aurr's & Crispy Tee's" featured on the Hoodstar album. On the track, Chingy once again reveals his southern drawl when he pronounces "Airs" as "Aurrs."
In 2006, Chingy tried his hand at acting when he starred in Scary Movie 4. He played a prisoner on an alien ship, co-starring with Carmen Electra, Leslie Nielsen, Debra Wilson, as well as fellow rapper from the south, Lil Jon.
Chingy and his mother have founded the Chingy for Change Foundation, which awards college scholarships to disadvantaged youth, provides food for the homeless and toys for underprivileged children. YUDDY |
