Chris Daughtry Bio

Chris Daughtry

Chris Daughtry, the fourth-place finalist in season five of American Idol, is now the head of his own band, aptly called Daughtry. With his rugged voice and powerful style, Chris Daughtry makes certain those fans who felt he was prematurely eliminated from the show have something to remember him by. And there’s no chance they’ll forget who Daughtry is anytime soon.

Born December 26, 1979, Christopher Adam Daughtry is a North Carolina native. Daughtry grew up in Virginia and enjoyed listening to rock music, which piqued his interest in becoming a music artist. He began to get serious about singing professionally around sixteen years of age and began performing with locally popular bands in high school.

Prior to auditioning for American Idol, Chris auditioned for the show Rock Star: INXS on CBS, but didn’t make the cut. In early 2006, Daughtry auditioned for American Idol’s fifth season in Denver, Colorado . This time he made the cut in a two to one judges’ decision. Daughtry made it all the way to the final four along with Taylor Hicks, Katharine McPhee, and Elliott Yamin.

Daughtry built a serious fan base along the way belting out tunes like Bon Jovi’s "Wanted Dead or Alive" and Fuel’s "Hemorrhage (In my Hands)." Then on May 10, 2006, in a surprising turn of events that shocked both Idol fans and the media, Daughtry was voted off the show. Paul Abdul cried. Randy Jackson looked mildly stunned and Simon Cowell wore his usual scowl.

After his elimination from Idol, Daughtry ran the customary talk show circuit making appearances on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, The Today Show, Regis and Kelly Live (with Regis Philbin and Kelly Ripa), and The Ellen DeGeneres Show. It was reported that he was offered the position of lead singer for the band Fuel, but he declined because of aspirations of starting his own band. Daughtry made a few guest and cameo appearances on television until July of 2006, when it was announced that he had signed a deal with 19 Entertainment/RCA Records and was working on an album.

His debut album, Daughtry, debuted on the Billboards at #2 in November of 2006. The single "It’s Not Over" from the album reached #65.

The album was produced by Howard Benson (My Chemical Romance and All-American Rejects), and Daughtry features Chris’s intuitive vocal abilities in wide-range and a collaborative effort between band members, songwriters, and Daughtry. The song "What I Want" also features a few riffs by acclaimed Guns N Roses guitarist, Slash.

While Daughtry is sometimes criticized for being too broad, both vocally and emotionally, in his music, his fans can’t get enough. Though he croons out ballads that make some women swoon, he remains happily married to wife, Deanna, and is a devoted dad who has spoken often of his kids in interviews. Where his career takes him next is unknown, but even with his former fourth-place loss, many still consider him an idol in his own right.
