Christian Bale Bio

Christian Bale

Audiences were first introduced to British actor Christian Bale with his stirring performance as a young boy trying to survive a Japanese interment camp during WWII in Stephen Spielberg’s Empire of the Sun in 1987. He’s worked steadily in films since, however, only a few of them are well-known.

Christian Charles Philip Bale was born on January 30, 1974, in Haverford, Wales, UK. The youngest of four children, he was the only boy of David and Louise Bale. His family lived a kind of nomadic life with his father moving them so often that Christian Bale has said that by the time was fifteen he had lived in fiteen places. However, he always found a place to show off his talents and after he filmed Empire of the Sun, more work found its way to him.

His next two big projects, however, were not hits. He trained for ten weeks to do the dancing and singing required for his next role in Disney’s 1992 Newsies, a musical that bombed at the box office. The following year he had another failure with Swing Kids. A few other failing movies followed after those, but then something unique happened to Christian Bale – the Internet.

In the early 1990s the Internet was still new. Christian Bale was contacted by a fan who wanted to create a website for him. Interview shy, Christian Bale thought this would be a great way to get out information about himself without having to speak to reporters. His site stood out and he gained thousands of fans who called themselves Baleheads. His movies that had been failures at the theater began to be rented in unusual numbers, and Newsies became a huge video hit.

Around this time, Bale was noticed by Winona Ryder and hand picked by her to play the role of Laurie in the adaptation of 1994's Little Women that she was filming. The film was a success, and he became a bit of a teen idol. It was also through Ryder that he met Sibi Blazic. Blazic had been Ryder’s personal assistant and she and Chistian Bale began to date. They were married in 2000 and in March of 2005 the couple welcomed their first child, Emmaline.

Since Little Women, Christian Bale has chosen challenging roles for himself including American Psycho in 2000, with Reese Witherspoon; Captain Corelli’s Mandolin in 2001, with Penelope Cruz and Nicolas Cage; and The Machinist in 2004, for which he dropped to 120 pounds. For his next movie, Bale would have to add 100 pounds of muscle to portray one of the most sought after roles in Hollywood, Batman, in 2005’s Batman Begins. The movie was a box office hit.

Being Batman made Christian Bale a household name, and he now has many projects lined up for the upcoming years including another Batman movie and I’m Not There, which is a movie about Bob Dylan’s life.
