Christopher Lee Bio

Christopher Lee

In his mid-eighties, Christopher Lee has already had a long and auspicious career. Not many actors his age are still sought after, but in recent years Christopher Lee has starred in some of the biggest box office hits including The Lord of the Rings trilogy and Stars Wars Episodes II and III. In fact, Lee’s career has been so prolific that with the exception of 1995, he has had at least one film released each year since 1948.

Christopher Lee was born in 1922 in London, England. Growing up he had no aspirations to be an actor and after his schooling was done he worked as an office clerk until he joined the Royal Air Force in WWII. It wasn’t until after the war that he began getting small parts in movies.

In the 1950’s Lee began an association with Hammer Film Productions and worked with them for years starring mainly in horror films. Until recently, he was best known for his work in horror films. He starred in The Curse of Frankenstein in 1957 as The Creature, Dracula in 1958 as Count Dracula, The Hound of the Baskervilles in 1959 as Henry Baskerville, The Mummy in 1959 as Kharis, the Mummy, The Terror of the Tongs in 1961 as The Tong Leader, The Face of Dr. Fu Manchu in 1965 as Dr. Fu Manchu, and many other spooky flicks of the 50s, 60s and 70s.

Many of the films that Lee has graced in were alongside his good friend, actor Peter Cushing. Cushing would later accept the role as Grand Moff Tarkin in the original Star Wars movie. Christopher Lee turned the role down. Two decades later he would get to star in a Star Wars film playing Count Dooku.

During his run as the prince of horror films, Christopher Lee married Birgit Kroencke, known as Gitte. The two married in 1961 and have two children. They have been married for over forty-five years, which is quite an accomplishment in the world of entertainment.

While best known for his roles in horror films, Christopher Lee has taken on quite a few other roles in his career. A few standouts are Rochefort in The Three Musketeers in 1973 and its sequel, the villain Francisco Scaramanga in the 1974 Bond movie, The Man with the Golden Gun, the evil Dr. Gannon in Escape from Witch Mountain in 1978, and a role in Tim Burton’s Sleepy Hollow in 1999. He recently re-teamed with Burton and his Sleepy Hollow co-star Johnny Depp in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory in 1995.

And of course, there have been his roles in the Lord of the Rings trilogy and Stars Wars. With his recent roles, a whole new generation of young people recognizes the long-standing actor. In all, Christopher Lee has starred in over 250 movie and television roles and he’s not done yet.
