Christopher Lloyd Biography American actor Christopher Lloyd solidified his place in film history when he portrayed the eccentric inventor in Back to the Future and its subsequent sequels. But Lloyd has had a long and varied career, including an award winning turn in Taxi and frequent voice projects for animated series.
Christopher Allen Lloyd was born October 22, 1938 in Stamford, Connecticut. His parents were Ruth Lapham and Samuel R Lloyd. Attending prestigious private schools, Lloyd obtained his education from Fessenden School followed by Staples High School. Knowing he wanted to act from early on, Lloyd first started performing when he was fourteen as a summer stock apprentice. Five years later, he studied under Sanford Meisner in New York City to learn the craft of acting. Lloyd began his career with a varied and extensive time onstage, appearing in the Broadway productions Happy End, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, The Seagull, MacBeth, and many others. After success in live theater, Lloyd made the transition into film and television. His onscreen debut came in the 1975 Oscar winner One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest with Jack Nicholson, Danny DeVito, and Louise Fletcher.
Three years later, Lloyd was cast in the new comedy series Taxi. Playing Reverend Jim Ignatowski, Lloyd shared the screen with DeVito, Judd Hirsch, Tony Danza, and Andy Kaufman. Lloyd was with the show for its entire five-season run, and for his time, he won two Emmy Awards. Despite his increased popularity, it was 1985 that offered him his greatest exposure. In this year, he won the role of Dr. “Doc” Emmett Brown in the sci-fi classic Back to the Future with Michael J Fox, Lea Thompson, and Crispin Glover. Lloyd reprised his role in 1989 and again in 1990. Lloyd is also known for playing Judge Doom in the 1988 animated hit Who Framed Roger Rabbit where he acted beside Bob Hoskins and Joanna Cassidy. Appearing in increasingly commercial ventures, Lloyd also lent his acting prowess to the role of Uncle Fester in The Addams Family with Anjelica Huston, Raul Julia, and Christina Ricci. Proving he still took his craft seriously, Lloyd was honored in 1994 with an Independent Spirit Award for his work opposite Brendan Fraser in Twenty Bucks. For the next fifteen years, Lloyd established himself as a go-to character actor, often called upon for slightly eccentric roles. To that end, he starred in Angels in the Outfield and lent his voice to many animated series.
Most recently, he appeared opposite Pamela Anderson in the short-lived series Stacked. He currently has six projects in varying stages of completion, all of which are slated for a 2008 or 2009 release. In his personal life, Lloyd has been married three times. His first marriage was to Catherine Boyd from 1959 to 1971. He didn’t remarry until 1988, when he wed Carol Vanek. They were together until their divorce in 1991. His third marriage lasted considerably longer. Married from 1992 to 2005, he and Jane Walker Wood finally divorced. |
