Christopher Plummer Bio

Christopher PlummerDespite extremely diverse and prolific careers, some actors will always be known for one signature role. For Christopher Plummer that role is that of Captain Georg von Trap in 1965’s wildly popular musical, The Sound of Music. He played opposite the then unknown Julie Andrews and audiences loved the two together. Ironically, Christopher Plummer reportedly despises The Sound of Music.
Christopher Plummer got his start on the stage in Canada in the late 1940s and debuted on Broadway in 1954 in The Starcross Story. He became known as a premiere Shakespearean actor and has played the parts of Henry V, Hamlet, Benedick in Much Ado About Nothing, and Mercutio in Romeo and Juliet among others. In 1974, Plummer earned a lead actor Tony Award for his role as Cyrano in the play of the same name.
While the stage is his love, Christopher Plummer has also acted in many movies, perhaps because they pay the bills much better. After his break out role in The Sound of Music, he starred in many movies including Oedipus the King in 1967, with Orson Welles; Waterloo in 1970, again with Welles; The Return of the Pink Panther in 1975, with Peter Sellers; The Man Who Would be King in 1975, with Sean Connery and Michael Caine; International Velvet in 1978, with Tatum ONeal; Somewhere in Time in 1980, with Christopher Reeves; Dragnet in 1987; Malcolm X in 1992, with Denzel Washington; and Twelve Monkeys in 1995, with Bruce Willis. He even played a Klingon in Star Trek 6: The Undiscovered Country in 1991.
In 1999, Plummer turned in a stellar performance as Mike Wallace in the film The Insider. He was praised for his dead-on performance of Wallace. Other recent performances include A Beautiful Mind in 2001, with Russell Crowe; Nicholas Nickleby in 2002; National Treasure in 2004, with Nicolas Cage; and The Lake House in 2006, with Sandra Bullock and Keanu Reeves.
Throughout his film career, Plummer has never stopped working on the stage and continues to do stage work in both America and in London.
Plummer has been married three times. His first marriage was to actress Tammy Grimes in 1956. They had one daughter together, actress Amanda Plummer. The couple divorced in 1960. His second marriage lasted from 1962 to 1967 to Patricia Lewis. The third time he apparently got it right because in 1970 he married actress Elaine Taylor, and they have been married for over thirty-five years.
Christopher Plummer has been acting for over fifty years, and he is still going strong. He currently has four movies in various stages of production, including Closing the Ring with Shirley MacLaine. YUDDY |
